You should be able to do a 10k on a normal diet, as long as you aren't low-carbing it. Runners need carbs.
After you run for an hour/6 miles, you'll need to hydrate and refuel with protein and carbs. Chocolate milk is awesome for this. If your long run is longer than that, you might want to try one of the gels on the market right now.0 -
I am 65 yrs old about 189 pounds and I did my first 10K in May actually my first race ever and I didnt really eat different while training. My daily runs 2 or 3x a week was between 4 and 5 miles and a generally did a long run on the weekend between 5 and 7 miles depending on how I felt or where I was running. I would eat some chicken or fish after for a little protein and hydrate.
I just had to combat the feeling that I ran and ran so now I could eat and eat because of it. I never experienced any weakness or sluggishness from a diet around 1800 calories a day while running ( except those from being 65yrs old)0 -
Thanks its just I'm a funny eater I guess. I suspect pasta is good for carbs, drink water etc. I have ran half marathons before but was 18/19 then and did it naturally. Asthma is a lot more restricting now so I want dietry help so get carbs and anything I need to help me train etc.0

This is a great question! I've been training for a 10k too and I really don't know what I should be eating. I actually ate a pop tart yesterday before my run (I know, I know I went grocery shopping last night so now I have real food. LOL) and I shaved 32 seconds off my average from last week. Usually however I eat some fruit before I run and some low fat greek yogurt when I'm done.0

Food....
Just eat a balanced and nutritious diet. If you're feeling sluggish have some more carbs. Make sure you're getting plenty of protein and healthy fats. I do carb load the day before a race and the day before a long run. I prefer slow carbs...grains, pasta, potatoes, etc the night before a big run. I usually have some fruit about 1/2 hour before a run and right afterwards for a quick boost.0 -
My mums best tip was to make sure you drink lots of water throughout the day, it keeps you hydrated for your run. I don't know much about the diet side though, I was looking for some inspiration about how to change my diet to suit running.0
