Migraines

Options
Does anyone else suffer from Migraines? I have been getting them a few times a week lately and it is really throwing a wrench into my plans to workout. I can barely get out of bed and take care of my children let alone do a cardio workout. I have tried all kinds of medication and nothing seems to help. I try to stick to my eating plan but when I get them I am so nausious that I can't hold food down. I'm looking for any suggestions that someone may have to either stop them all together or learn how to suffer through them and still have a productive day. :(

If you have been getting them lately and never had them before its probably because of your diet change. A lot of the time whenever you cut out suga or caffine it will result in headaches and migraines. My husband actually went to the ER the other day because he had a really bad migrane it was because he cut sugar out of his diet. I hope it gets better soon.

I have suffered from seriously debilitating migraines for the past ~10 years. Mine are hormonal and are based around my cycle, but other things (sudden shift in weather, fake sugars) can set them off or make them much worse.

First, do you know what triggers your migraines? That is a huge part of fending off the problem.

The second thing is getting on a class of triptan drugs (imitrex, zomig, etc) that are vaso-constrictors (if you don't have heart issues) and cut straight to the pain. Zomig is made in a nasal spray (prescription only) so if you get sick to your stomach you won't heave the med and it gets in your bloodstream in <1 minute.

Lastly, is a great neuro/headache specialist. This is KEY!

There is no way to completely stop migraines because it is a disease and the headache is just one of the symptoms. You can reduce the number of pain flare ups several ways, but migraines will never go away completely.

I stick to a good work out schedule, good sleep schedule, eat regularly (don't let my blood sguar get too low), try to stay stress free, take some meds (prescription and natural) to "prevent" them, and when an episode occurs, to take my medication (triptan) asap.

If you can give me more info about causes I can give you more tips. or you can PM me, but if you are nauseous and unable to get out bed, I would suggest a neuro/headache specialist.

FYI: Some people treat their migraines with caffeine (exedrin migraine has caffeine). This can often backfire.

I suffered with migraines all through my 40's to the point of ending up in the ER one time. Most of the time I would hibernate under the covers, lights out and trying to dissolve all sound and sensations; which was hard to do as that was when I was parenting my young children. I do believe sometimes that my hormones reeked the havoc on me, but did learn that red wine and bleu cheese (especially a combination of the 2) were sometimes triggers for my migraines. When Imitrex was the new medicine on the scene, it worked for me if I took it when I felt a migraine coming on; not sure what is on the market now nor how they work. You see, my migraines ended (and I am not joking about this) when I walked out of my marriage 8 years ago. Please NOTE I am not suggesting that for you or anyone else out there!!!!!!; I am just explaining that migraines are triggered by different things for different folks and if you can find what triggers yours, you are in a better place of controlling your migraines. They are a debilitating problem and I understand your pain and am hopeful that you find a way to deal with yours. Take care of yourself and seek professional help in this endeavor.

Hi I suffer occasional migraines & generally find painkillers, wearing my glasses & being in a dark room help. My 9 year old son suffers badly with migraines & was having 1 or 2 a week & strugling with concentration at school. He was referred to a neurologist & now takes an anti-epilepsy medication Topamax (he doesnt have epilepsy) which acts on the brain & has had a dramatic effect on reducing his attacks & he now gets 1 or 2 every couple of months. If you continue to suffer its worth speaking to your dr to see what they can suggest.
    Hope this helps

I have had migraines for as long as I can remember-so I consider myself a bit of an "expert" . I have been on at least 12 different medications that did not work for me. The only thing that works for me is to take Topimax as a preventative. I also saw a great neurologist, but honestly, my pcp does great at taking care of me! If you have not been diagnosed and are under the care of a dr, it is important to do that first-not all headaches are migraines and it is important to know what you are dealing with!! It is important for you to figure out what your triggers are as they are different for everyone! Good luck!!

Ugh. Feel your pain. When I first got them, I would be in the ER ALL of the time because I would go into status migrainosus (logner than 48 hours) and nothing would break the cycle. Totally feel your pain!

Yes, red wine and "stinky" cheeses (as I call them) trigger me, too and are common triggers.

I suffered from migraines all my life until I found the mircle drug Maxalt. It will get rid of the migraine even if the pain has already started. Since I started using maxalt I have never missed another day at work or with my family. Please asked your doctor about this drug-Judy

I have had migraines all my life. They got better in my adult years but I have about one or two doozies in a year. What I do at the first sign of a migraine (unless you wake up with it) Is take Advil. Not on an empty stomach though. When I get the nausea part I have to eat crackers or chips that are salty. Its a must. But if I drink caffeine with the advil it works faster. Although caffeine is supose to be bad for migraines it never has been for me. If you are having them that ofter you really need to see a doctor and get some different meds. They have so many options. My migraines also come on with weather changes. If a storm comes or goes it gets worse. Sorry your suffering. I know your pain. I get the don't touch-no sound-no light attitude when I get one. You can't do that with little ones. Hope you can make it through. Sometimes the eating right has to go to the wayside when you don't feel well.
But a big plus if you can muster a workout it helps alleviate the migraine headache pain. Good Luck

Second the diet change. I started getting severe migraines last year every month for about a week solid. It got to the point that I would know when the hell week would start just based on how much time had past since the last one. I finally tracked it down to the fact that when I dropped soda from my diet, I replaced it with water mixed with the fruit drink mixes - of which I drank A LOT. Turns out all those flavored water mixes have aspartame in it, and it turns out that is one of my triggers. Since I stopped drinking that, I've only had a couple of minor migraines in about 6 months.

Do a search on common triggers, though unfortunately everyone is different - for me my worst triggers are caffeine and aspartame, but other people use caffeine to help combat them. The way that worked best for me was to just systematically change one common trigger at time until you can either rule it out or check that off as the cause. Takes a while, but it’s definitely worth the effort.

--CAFFEINE!! That is an old school remedy.

--at the very first sign boil like a cup of water and a tablespoon or two of thyme...that didn't work for me but she swears by it.

--Maxalt is the prescription my doc prescribed, i get the side effect of burning in my chest but it is way better than a migraine!

--chug a couple glasses of water

--my best friends mom takes imitrex (er however u spell it) again there are side effects but she says its better than a migraine.

--Take an ace bandage and wrap it pretty tightly around yur head, doesn't get rid of it but it helps me with the pain

--hot or cold applied to where it hurts

Hope those ideas help! Hang in there, I know they can be brutal! Just keep yur head up and know they will pass and don't let yourself get down because you didn't work out. THERE IS ALWAYS A NEW DAY TOMORROW!

I used to get them quite often. Muscle relaxers and painkillers always helped but the one thing that has really eliminated them is seeing a chiropractor. Sounds a little crazy but a coworker of mine has also had success with this. Just to give you an idea I went from 2+ per week to 1 in the last 6 months.

I would def suggest that if you are open to it. If not def pay attention that you are getting enough water and check your journal for foods that could be setting it off. Good luck!

Oh yes I have got migraines as long as I can remember. I get horrible ones that last for days. One time I had a horrible one that lasted 2 1/2 weeks nothing would help, finally I went to an accupunturist because I heard it might help and it immediately got rid of it. It doesnt work for everyone but might be worth a try. I normally take relpax for them , it helps most of the time but not always. I hope you find something that helps soon. good luck

I totally agree! If I had the money, I would be seeing one regularly and he is certain he can get rid of mine!

I have suffered from Migraines, alot actually. The first bout was when I was in about the second grade,my dad is a diebetic, so we used artificial sweetners, didn't really know much better. But I kept getting really bad headaches, to a point where I couldn't focus on my school work. We tried all kinds of different things, beat sugar, corn, and other things it didn't change until my mom found a site online about the sweetners in diet soda and all that. never had any since.
As well as 3 years ago, I was eating a normal teenager diet, fast food, junk food, whatever. but I started to notice that if I ate breads, or things with wheat I got a migraine, so I quit eating breads, then my mom and I decided to go completly gluten free. and haven't had a headache since.
I hope this is helpful to you.
