Squats, What is the difference, im confused???

Im confused, what is the difference between squats, lunges, back squats, leg press, and shoulder squats. Do they all work the same muscles? Is it better to do one over the other? How do you choose, what difference will it have on your workout?

    http://exrx.net/Lists/Directory.html is a great resource. You can search by exercise or muscle to see what is doing what. Ultimately if you want to get strong and functionally fit, you need to lift heavy with exercises that incorporate many muscle groups. Squats, deadlifts, bench, row, and overhead press should be staples.
