Boil-in-a-bag rice... wth?

So I bought some rice for my upset stomach. A serving is 48g dry (about 1 cup cooked), which you can't really measure because it's, you know, in a bag. So I cooked a bag, measured the rice cooked, took a portion out, measured that... checked the box to see the calories per bag... and I'm just totally super confused. There are 4 bags, and approximately 9 servings in the box..

WTH? So I guess I'm having a totally random amount of rice for lunch. Woohoo.

Is your question why it's more than 48g? Are you factoring in water the rice has been hydrated with

No, my question is how am I supposed to know how many grams are in a bag when there are 4 bags and 'approximately' 9 servings.

Easy. Look at the box to check the total amount of grams in it and divide that by 4. Tada!

Clearly it's 2 servings per bag plus a BONUS serving. Each bag is 2.25 servings. Half a bag is 1.125 servings.

if there are 9 servings per box and 4 bags . . . and a serving is approximately 1 cup - then there are 2¼ cups per bag

I think people missed the 'approximately' part lol. But I guess I'll go with it.

I should have added that there's no way there's 2.25 cups cooked in a bag either... Bleh.

this is why you WEIGH food, not measure, unless it's liquid. Food settles, if it was all fluffed up, it'd be a cup, a cup is 8oz on a food scale - measure it out - this is the depressing part about servings it always looks better in the measuring cup, and is way over when you plop it on the scale

Yeah I usually weigh everything, but as I said, you can't weigh the rice in the bag because there's the bag too, when it's uncooked, so it would give messed up results anyway. Bah, it's not like I'm going to meet my goal today anyway as I can't eat much.

Go get some steamfresh rice. It comes in white, brown and a mix with veggies. There are 2 servings in a bag. Easy and delicious and fast!

1 part rice, 2 parts water - i'd just cut the bag open and cook it the way it should be done :-)

But the bags are so cute, and they costed the extra money for the convenience of them, not using them would be like throwing good money after bad.

Well you aren't going to eat the bag so you have to take the rice out at some point. Weigh it in the bag and out of the bag and subtract the difference.

But honestly, I will be shocked if your scale registers a difference.

but so then that gives you the grams right? One fourth of the total in grams? For a half a bag? But then how much is that in cups. Wait, does MFP have a dry grams rice measure? If so, this MAY BE YOUR ANSWER OP!

she can't WEIGH it cause it's in the bag!

She can CUT the bag open . . . spoon out some of the rice into a bowl on a scale to weigh it - voila - weighed!
save what's not eaten for later.
