Just start making them the same foods you eat, with maybe just a little bit more for your hubby. He is young enough that he wont even realize what you are doing and if he learns now, he wont know the different in the end. :-) My daughter is 3 and doesn't know the difference between packaged food and homemade food, for the most part. My 8-yr old Step-Daughter doesn't know the difference, except if she can see the color, between ground beef and ground turkey.

again, he is young enough that you shouldn't have a problem with feed him healthy.

    GOOD LUCK!!!!

Make sure you cook from scratch - really from scratch, not making up packets of this and that or opening packest from the freezer and putting them in the oven - as much as possible to ensure you're not feeding lots of hidden sugar, salt and fat.

Find yourself a really good cook-book - not one full of gourmet dinner-party recipes, but one that's all about feeding your family. The Betty Crocker ones are quite simple (although they typically have a lot of processed ingredients and cheese!), Delia Smith also presents things very clearly (her "How to Cook" series of three books are excellent). You can find lots of recipes online as well bbcgoodfood is an excellent website which inludes all the nutritional info (calories, fat etc.), but for advance meal planing I do like to have a book to flick through.

Make sure everyone eats the same - otherwise you're sending tricky signals to your son. If you're short of time in the evening invest in a slow cooker (they're honestly not expensive), throw in some chicken, a jar of passata and some chopped veggies in the morning and leave it on low all day. Then in the evening cook some pasta and there you go - healthy homecooked food in all of 20 mins including prep.

Finally portion control - invest in a food scale (the sort you can put your own bowl on before you switch it on are great) because if you weigh out a healthy portion of pasta, or potatoes, or cereal (OK most things!) it looks REALLLY small so you add another handful. Or two....

You can do this! Once you start cooking you'll notice how food tastes different when you control the seasoning/sugar levels.

If you consider what you're eating healthy for you and a sustainable lifestyle then why would you prepare separate food for your family? There aren't diet foods and regular foods. It's all about learning to eat in proper proportions and making better food choices. Include lean meats and veggies in your meals and you're good to go.
  • I use e-meals (a recipe/shopping list subscription service) originally as part of our family's financial diet/debt snowball, but it has also helped us improve our physical health. I'm in and out of the store in 20 minutes, I only have to go once a week, and I can run our household on around $100 per week - (me, DH and an 18-month old boy).

Also I live by the no junk in the house rule. Just don't allow it in your house. Ever. If it ain't there, you can't eat it!

I wish you luck, because I remember being really frustrated until I found what worked for my family.

This is what I do. "Here is your food. Eat that or don't eat at all."

Allrecipes and Pinterest have some *****in' recipes.
