8 weeks ago I sprained my ankle.. walking down stairs, it turned and I landed on it. I did all the right things, taped it with KT Tape, ibuprofen, ice. I was probably too active throughout May and it was still hurting so I went to the DR for x-rays. Nothing broken. They gave me the boot and I've been wearing that for 3 weeks. It STILL hurts quite a bit so I'm not sure what to do now. The DR said if it still hurts in a few weeks come back for an MRI but I don't really want to pay for an MRI if it's really just a sprained ankle but it's been 8 weeks and it's still hurting. I've been pretty easy on it. I've been biking here and there but the DR said I could as long as I taped it and it doesn't seem to hurt when I'm doing that.
Thoughts?? What do I do??

My dear, if it is still hurting after 8 weeks and you are following all of the dr's instructions, it may not be "just a sprain" There are tendons, etc in your foot that could be strained, or worse yet torn that will not show up on a regular xray. If you continue to do things on it without having it checked out you run the risk of making it worse or causing more serious or permanant damge to it, which I know you don't want to do! MRI's are pricey, but you have insurance and you need to take care of you. You only have one body, you gotta take care of it girl, you know that!!
Love ya! P.S. I miss your face a ton!!!

I'm almost a year into an ankle problem because I was stupid and didn't go to the ER right away (July 4th, happy busted ankled anniversary). Google peroneal tendonitis. Does that look right for your symptoms? Otherwise, just keep icing and following dr's orders. Good luck.0

Sounds like you did not give it enough time to heal properly. Ankle injuries can take months to get over because you can't avoid using them, even if you stop exercising entirely. It took me nearly a year to fully recover from an ankle sprain a couple years ago because I stubbornly refused to stop working out. Do some ankle mobility work, and give it time.0

I know it's hard, but stay off it! If you would have stayed off it for a week straight, it might have healed! Also, KY tape is not for sprains. Get some sports tape. RICE. It's not surprising for a sprain to sill hurt 8 weeks later.0

If it hurts after 8 weeks, then it's not just a first degree sprain. It's more likely a 2nd degree or 3rd degree. I'd go to an orthopedist to get it checked.

I injured myself similarly about 10 years ago and my doc wouldn't let me get an MRI (saying that it was just sprained and ibuprofen and PT were all I could do). Eight years later, the tendon in my inner ankle ruptured completely and I could not walk on it at all. Doc said it was another sprain (I no longer go to this doc), but this time I asked for a specialist to look at it. He was flabbergasted that I had not had surgery with the original injury. He ended up having to rebuild my entire foot: transplanting tendon from one part of my foot to my ankle, breaking my foot in two places to reshape it, adding bone graft+plate+3 pins, and (because the Achilles tendon had atrophied from years of limited motion) detached and reattached the Achilles tendon to a lower area of my leg. I was able to start walking six months after the surgery, but it took a year for me to get back to my 9+ mile walks.
Short answer: Get it taken care of now!0 -
Thanks everyone! I probably should've mentioned I've had life long ankle problems with this one and a ligament reconstruction 10 years ago. I called the DR and left a message... we will see what they have to say. I should be training for a half marathon right now so I'm pretty impatient for this to get better but I've been extra good to it so I don't know why it isn't healing. ugh!0
