I hate going to the gym at night.

It seems like all the inconsiderate dumb a@@holes come out at night.

Tonight this guy decided that he needed to have a phone conversation between each of his sets...he was using 1 of 3 flat benches available. He was approached several times (myself and 3 other people), to ask if he could give up the bench he was sitting on....but no he "just had 2 more sets"......that were 15 minutes apart!

Then another chick had her PURSE (not gym bag, but purse) on a bench while she did goblet squats next to it....but *I* got a dirty look and an eyeroll for asking if she could move it so I could actually use the bench to work out.

That plus having to walk all over the free weights area looking for weights people failed to rerack made me very grateful that I usually go in the am when its fairly empty.

My gym is actually pretty decent. The busier it gets the more polite people seem to be. There are those few who insist on testing my emotional equilibrium however.

People who don't re-rack their weights....grrrhhhhh!!!!!!! That is one thing I just don't understand. Are there people who are so important that they don't feel obligated to do so?

Or are they just so absent minded that they space it out????? Just don't get it...

I've had similar issues. I just take the equipment. I put their stuff on the floor or rack their plates and set up for myself. Nobody has ever said "I wasn't done". They just give me a dirty look and walk away. If you wanna do supersets in a busy gym, tough. You can't. Not with machines, benches, or racks, at least. Its poor etiquette.

As for people taking 5-10 minute breaks. Confront them in a rude manner. Try this one on for size "This isnt a park bench and you're not lifting nearly enough to need that much rest time". Or try this "Can I work in?" and when they give you a dirty look just say "Well, can you work out". That one is golden.

I suggest you just dont ask. Im nice to people once and once only. If they keep doing the same nonsense I try to make it so uncomfortable that they wont come back. Its the golden rule enforced, right?

ETA: In his defense, two sets can take 10 minutes. If you're exaggerating, you're the one with a problem. I prefer to do faster paced sets with 60-90 second breaks, but, 3-4 minutes isn't really abnormal. You also have no right to say what someone does between sets. I can sympathize with someone being on their phone or something cuz the only other thing to do is people watch and its kinda rude.

I find that the gym is usually nearly empty about an hour to an hour and a half before closing. That's usually when I try to go in. Most of the obnoxious people come in after work/school (inluding a lot of high schoolers lifting with terrible form to try and impress one another). It's too crowded for me then, and there are a lot of people who have no idea how to be considerate for their fellow gym goers.
  • What do you mean by at night? I usually go on later on during the day (5pm or 8 pm depending on schedule.) It's a lot busier around 5-7, but around 8 it seems pretty empty. Either way, I haven't had any real problems with anyone.

I hear ya. I almost never go st night for the same reasons but didn't go this morning so I went tonight. I was at the dumbbell rack and some young twenty something guy approaches me and says " I just thought you should know you have a gorgeous *kitten*." what?!?!?! In the middle of a crazy crowded gym, I was mortified! At least 15 people overheard him too. Reason #72 I work out in the mornings.

Its not that the 2 sets took 10 mins ....its that he rested for 10 to 15 minutes BETWEEN each set..... while he sat on the bench and carried on a full phone conversation. So 3 sets took him almost an hour. It was the entire time I was lifting.

If your actually working, I dont care how long each set takes you, but occupying a bench for that long is unacceptable, unless you are doing multiple exercises.

I will likely just start butting in ad using the equipment if they are clearly not using it.
