Birthday Food

So I've been on my diet for a month and a half and doing well so far, however my birthday is coming up next month.
On your birthday if you celebrate with family and friends, do you allow yourself that slice of cake or that one cupcake or do you bring along something to snack on that won't be sugar overload?
I went to a birthday party for a friend's son a couple of weeks ago, and took a Skinny Cow chocolate bar with me to eat so I wouldn't cave in watching everyone eat cupcakes and candy and it helped. I thought about doing the same thing for mine but.....
I'd love to hear what everyone else does.

If you log your food and make room for it, of course.0

Different strokes for different folks, I guess, but a Skinny Cow bar would NOT make me feel better about skipping birthday cake, especially my own birthday cake. No freaking way. Life is too short for that crap.
I think some perspective is important here. How many calories are in a typical slice of birthday cake? I'll be generous and say 400. That's roughly a tenth of a pound. You would have to eat nearly TEN SLICES to gain a pound, even if you ate at maintenance for the rest of the day. Let's not be silly about this.0 -
Just be conscious and make smart choices. Do not eat the entire cake or maybe workout an extra 10 minutes. As long as you do not eat a slice of cake for EVERYONE'S birthday, I am sure you can indulge, especially for your own party!0

I overate a whole bunch for my birthday this week. Nothing really happened. I ate a loooooot. Like, really - SO MUCH FOOD. And I didn't "make up for it" by cutting elsewhere or exercising it off. I gained a pound (and it was probably just water weight). A couple of bad days won't get you fat, just like a couple of good days won't get you thin. Consistency is key! After a couple of days of regular eating and exercise, I'm sure my big bloated tummy will go back to normal and I'll continue on just like it never happened.0

On my birthday? Damn straight I'm eating the cake. I'll eat the cake at any other birthday I'm invited to also. I want to lose weight, but I intend to live my life as well. Account for it or make up for it later.0

Yeah, I would just eat the cake. My birthday cake, or anybody else's. But then, I decided when I started on MFP that I was going to do my best to eat the way I intend to keep eating through maintenance, and I sure as hell don't intend to permanently give up birthday cake.
Now, if I worked somewhere where there was birthday cake in the office every day, or every week, then I'd mostly be turning it down, but my cake? Cake at a birthday party I'm invited to? No, you bet I'll be eating that. :drinker:
Remember, it's how you eat most of the time that counts, not a one off slice of cake, meal, day or even week. When I was at my biggest, I ate salad for lunch, lots of times, and it never made me thin. Equally, one slice of cake (if you actually want it of course) won't make you fat, stop you losing weight or derail your progress so far.0 -
