Healthy rate of loss?

Hi!

Let's start off with some stats: I'm a 28-yr-old female, 5'7", and a starting weight of 227 lbs. Through 3 months of 'actual' trying, I've managed to lose 40 lbs! :-))) My current weight is 187...and goal weight is 130.

I'm eating 3 meals a day, stopping when I FEEL full, avoiding eating in between, and I've been working on improving my regimen - been working out 5-7 days/week, but nothing extreme: brisk walking, mowing grass, etc...

While I'm so ecstatic about my weight loss, it seems no one notices, or cares, which IS completely fine...I don't need compliments to continue my journey. Well, some people have noticed. A wonderful family member (that hasn't seen me for a few months) actually commented yesterday: "Wow, you've lost some weight, but you were pretty before." I don't know, but this comment kind of had me feeling like I'm in the wrong with trying to obtain total wellness - to become a HAPPIER, HEALTHIER me...which I am! (Keep in mind that I lost 20 lbs a yr ago, so I've only lost 20 more since this fam member last seen me.)

Seems there's barely any positive support, other than my MFP buddies!! :-) Thank you for that!

The bottom line, for someone of my size, goals, etc...what would be a good rate of weight loss? I'm not trying to do anything extreme here, I'm just completely motivated at the moment...and hopefully for the long run!

For now, 1.5 to 2 lbs per week is healthy for you. As you continue to lose, that number will drop, maybe half a pound for every 20 lbs you lose. This is assuming, of course, that you want to lose mostly fat and not muscle.

Well you can go online and use the guidelines, but heres my thing. I'm 5'4, and according to doctors I should weigh between 125-145ish. That will never happen and I've never been that small. The smallest I've ever been was right before my thyroid surgery and I weighed 172 lbs. My family was telling me I weighed to little. But I'm shaped different now due to having my son, so my goal is 170 BUT I'm going to see how it goes the closer I get.
My thought is this, when you get to a weight, that YOU feel comfortable with. That YOU feel healthy and happy, then your good. If your losing weight and you start to feel like I'm to thin or I'm still to big, you'll know! Good luck and we are always here for you!

Yep, I would also say 1.5-2lbs per week. Sounds like you're doing everything right and making a lifestyle change rather than just trying to lose weight fast, so even if you lost 1/2lb in a week, it seems like you'd be doing it permanently.

And don't worry - people WILL start noticing! I'm a classic yo-yo dieter, and was 205 at my heaviest a lonnnnnng time ago, and had to get down to around 165 for people to really start commenting! Don't know if it's my body, or if I hide it well when I'm heavier, but it's inevitable that people will notice when you get down to a certain weight.

I can't understand how those around you haven't noticed your amazing loss!! I really do think people go round with selfish blinkers on or they are just to jealous to mention it!!
As a lot of the other posters have said, 1 -2lbs/week is a good rate and when you get within 14lbs of goal more like 1/2lb per week though I'm finding its only 1/2lb every other week (I'm 5lbs from my goal) if even that, but its not a race so I'm fine with that, I know I'll get there eventually.

    Wishing you continued success :)

I agree, 1.5-2 lbs is a healthy loss at this point (it's what I'm aiming for as well, with my doc's blessings).

Mind you, to me that is an *average* number over the long term. There'll be weeks when it's considerably more or less or you even hit a plateau. So, I'd say keep it up while you're pumped

As to people not noticing/saying anything, well, there may be a number of reasons. Actually, if they see you daily they really may not have been observant enough to realise it (that happened to me with my late husband when he had considerable weight fluctuations due to illness - it took a family member who hadn't seen him for some time to point it out to me :noway: )

And yes, regular photo shoots are a great way to self-motivate (can't wait for my next one coming up on Sunday  , I do "photo shoots", measuring once a month)

Your family members comment 'but you were pretty before' may have just have been a way of trying not to offend you (e.g. so you don't 'think' s/he meant you were "ugly fat" before  )
