Has anyone had any success with doing Zumba?

I've watched a class before but haven't join. I was thinking of buying the DVD's and then joining the advanced class (there are no beginner classes right now). Let me know what you think of Zumba! For those of you who haven't heard: www.zumba.com

i've never personally tried it however my cousin loves it. She does it a few times a week & has had success with it. She loves it!

I have the dvd's but I am seriously the most uncoordinated person so it probably wouldn't be a good fit for me. Lol. But if you can do it, that's awesome! If you can find something you love, it makes it so much easier to do it, right?

I'm a Zumba instructor, and it's a blast. For me it's not a huge calorie burner, about 230 calories for an hour, but depending on the instructor, you should be getting a full body workout, It's a geat switch once in awhile from other exercises, I would add this to your workout regiman and not replace other cardio by it, it's not intense enough, at least not for a more intermediate to advanced participant.
  • Really? I was told Zumba could burn approx. up to 500-1000 calories per hour. I guess it depends on how much you work it and your body type?
I am uncoordinated as well so I don't know how well I'd do but I'd love to give it a shot.
My plan would be to lower my calorie intake and to do Zumba 2-3 times (maybe 4) per week along with walking 30 minutes 5 days/wk.

I've been at it forever, and i'm not a big girl, my burn will be much less then someone who's heavier and not on the same firness level as I am. It really sucks, I have people in my class that wear a HRM and burn 400+calories, and i'm not even in the same ballpark..oh well!

Zumba is fantastic! It's a ton of fun too! The more you get into it, and shake your booty and have a good time, the more you'll burn. Don't worry about how you look - everyone's doing the same thing. Just enjoy yourself! It's a great way to get a workout and not feel like you're exercising at all :)
  • Thanks everyone for you responses. I've looked up some youtube videos on Zumba and it seems kinda hard to comprehend with all the fast movements...even when they are doing it step by step. I guess I'm not coordinated that well. I'd still like to try it though.

I have the Zumba DVDs and I've done some classes. If you think you won't be able to keep up with an actual class, do the beginner DVDs. They give you the basic moves and you can get a feel of everything before you actually get into a class and trip over your own feet LOL! I've got a little dance background so it came easily for me but if you find you have 2 left feet then definitely check out the Zumba beginner DVDs. I must say though, I enjoy the classes so much more because of the high energy and positivity of everyone in the room. Its a real mood booster!

Every zumba instructor is different. I would go give it a try and see what you think. Keep in mind that it usually takes about 3 classes or so to get in the groove and figure out some of the moves. Just go and have fun and keep moving, that's all that matters! :)
