A great place to start. Also don't be too shy to find and attend a local class. The right class, pace and teacher will really help you to progress and feel good about your practise.

I too suggest you go to a class. You will likely feel a little odd at first doing some of the poses. Having a good coach and others around helps a lot. I have been going for a while now, and I still find it a little odd practicing at home by myself.

I would agree that trying a class would be best. Don't be intimidated, just go and be yourself and have fun! See if any local studios have a beginner workshop. The studio I attend does one once and month and it's a really great place to start. If not just make sure it's a slower class and you'll do fine, just remember child's pose.
I do have one DVD recomendation, Giam's Weight Loss yoga with Trudy Styler (at least I think that's the name of the DVD). Although I'm not particularly a huge fan of her's (she's Sting's wife) she doesn't bother me too much and the instructer she has with her is pretty good. It is designed to be good for those looking to add yoga to thier weightloss plan. I think that all poses are fairly accessable to all levels. Namaste!:flowerforyou:

If you want to do yoga at home and have a smartphone, iPhone and Android phones both have a Daily Yoga application that I, personally, love and use almost every day. Some of their routines have to be bought (only for a dollar or two, I think) but many of them are free and they have a few great routines for beginners. :)

Groupon has a lot of great offers for Yoga classes. I recently bought one in my area for $30 and I get to attend 20 classes!

Something else you might look into as a beginner is picking up a yoga book from the library (or Amazon, but at least the library's free!). I don't recommend using a book to actually move through a routine, but some books are really great at explaining how you should be doing the poses and what to pay attention to while practicing them.

I have a book called American Yoga (I think) that has a page or two on each of the most common poses (with lots of color photgraphs) and modifications for beginners. For a more technical look at how the body performs yoga, I really like the book Yoga Anatomy. This one doesn't tell you how to do them, but it does explain which muscle groups you're using, how to breathe during the poses, and how yoga can become a full mind-body experience.

If you want the specifics on the titles, feel free to send me a message

Anyone have any recommendations specifically for obese beginners? A lot of extra fat around the belly and on the thighs limits range of motion and wrecks havoc with balance. Often modified instruction is needed (e.g., putting your feet "shoulder width apart" might work one way for thinner people or even overweight people, but for someone with very thick thighs and knees it's much a much less stable position and the center of gravity is not in the same place).

I've heard great stories too, but they tend to be yoga classes actually tailored to obese people. I know obese people can do yoga! We just need modified coaching appropriate to the way our bodies balance differently.

My sister who is 100 lbs overweight did yoga a few times and since she hardly moves, managed to loose weight. She didn't keep it up though.

A class is a good idea to make sure your form is correct. But there are tons of tapes and dvds - see what your library has for free.
