Gimmick diets like the 5:2 intermittent fasting lead to binges, and if you binge on diets like this, you shouldn't be on them. You should never take up a diet for the short term to lose weight because you're guaranteed to gain the weight back after you lose it. You need to approach nutrition in a way that you can use for the long term. Adopt a diet that has you eating 15% under your TDEE and hit your macro minimums and you won't binge

I don't follow the 5:2 diet but if it were me, I'd just say I'm glad that's over with and try not to put yourself in that position again, maybe try to undo a little with some extra exercise if you can .

and just know that you can't beat yourself up over it , it's already done . Just get it back together and start new and fresh tomorrow

Log it, carry on normally. As long as it doesn't take you over on your weekly calorie goal, you'll be fine.

My Doctor threatened me after I told her about the so called american diet (I am in the US)

Her words just do what your doing, eat healthy, eat well, it'll happen"

Binge is just that, a slip up, you fell off the horse, get back on and keep going.
  • Thank you very much guys :) made me feel loads better :)

Chocolate, 2 biscuits and a cupcake isn't a binge, in fact that's what my snacks usually look like. Log it and move on :flowerforyou:

why do you think a fast day will compensate? fast days do nothing but cause water loss and torture your body, unless you a spiritual purpose behind it, then by all means, obey God. You had a binge. Ok. Take the consequences that follow and make a choice to stay on track today and tomorrow. The only way to overcome your habit of binging is to recognize the issue, accept the consequences and learn from them- not compensate by starving for a day.

Best advice I can give you:

Pick yourself up, brush it off and move on.

I know, easier said than done. But it happened. There's nothing that you can do about it now except learn from it. And there's no need to compensate for it by killing yourself the next day with exercise or starving yourself. That will only lead to a vicious cycle.

    Good luck!

Have you done the math. How much is your calorie deficit doing this vs having a daily deficit. For me a daily deficit is greater than a 2x a week deficit. I suspect it's pretty much the same story for most people.

OMG, your life is OVER!!! You had chocolate and cupcakes and cookies because you weren't feeding your body well enough to avoid binging??? THE HORROR!!!

...Okay, so see how silly that sounds? Stop with the guilt. If you find yourself binging on "fasting days", then that style is not for you. Simple as that. It's much easier to just eat normal, balanced days and continue on. I'd probably eat my couch if I tried to do the fasting crap. It's not for me. I like food, I enjoy eating decent proportions whenever my little heart desires it. If you feel guilty about eating a bit of cake and cookies, then you aren't going to be able to sustain a lifestyle and should re-evaluate how you're eating. Guilt over food will never do you any good.

I'm not surprised you're binging on crap if you're fasting (starving) for two days out of 7....

I totally agree with this. If you put yourself down and feel bad, it will only make you want to eat more. You're doing good... slow and steady wins the race.

I agree with the above poster that said this was not a binge.

Excuse me, eating 3/4 of a 6 inch cake with loads of buttercream icing on it IS A BINGE...I should know...I did it last week, and felt terrible, however, I was good every other day, and still lost 1 lb at my weekly weigh in yesterday!!!

MOVE ON, get back up quickly and eat healthy every day.....fasting is for the birds. Your body needs fuel.

    Good luck!

Sorry. all your hard work is indeed wasted... there is nothing to do now but give up and wait for Type 2 diabetes to take you.

Huh? I've been 5:2 fasting for the last 2+ years. I'm 5'7 and weigh 130 lbs., I'm not on any prescriptions and I just completed a sprint triathlon (1/3 mile swim, 9 miles on the bike, 5K). Oh, yeah. I'm 60 years old.

5:2 may not be for everyone and it may lead to bingeing for some people, but don't knock it for those of us who have found that it works and it's sustainable over the long run.

To the OP: I agree with the others. This is not a binge based on some of the binges I've seen described here. We all have failures of one kind or another. What's important is being able to recover from failure. Keep calm and carry on.

I had to take cheez-its and chocolate out of the house because it was bad. I'm so much better now, because when I'm out and I want a peppermint pattie or bag of chips, I buy a regular sized one, and enjoy.

I agree with other posters; that's not a binge. Log it to keep yourself accountable. Pick yourself up. Brush it off. Make better decisions. You're human and bound to make mistakes.
