is lower sugar and higher protein the answer?

I started using this app just to keep better track of what I was eating. Frankly I had given up on losing and was concentrating on exercising, gaining muscle, better balance, etc. When I saw the reports I started adjusting my food (mainly to better fuel workouts). The less sugar and more protein I ate, the more satisfied I felt and I started losing. I still don't know if this will last or if my body will adjust to this and just gain it back. Is this for real?

Lower sugar or just lower carbs in general?

Either way, carbs/sugar are purely preferential assuming you have no medical issues.

ETA: And assuming you are meeting other macro nutrient goals for minimum fat and protein.

I eat a higher protein diet and though I do not track my sugar or care so much about it, I don't eat all that much either. I would not suggest cutting out sugar, both because it is in so many good foods like milk and fruit, but also because I wouldn't be willing to give up ice cream and other sweets. The trick in all of this is moderation.

Protein is more satiating which can lead to you eating fewer calories.

I am not really cutting out anything, but I have cut back on some things and am getting about 20 percent protein. Most of the sugar is now from fruit and vegetables. I heard protein was more satisfying, but I am at a point where I did not believe anything would work for me. 59 years old and 60 or so pounds overweight with an insatiable appetite. I don't remember when I was not hungry all the time. I really am not hungry after dinner now. I am just afraid to hope.

My guess is that it's not really hungry but a lack of being very full. Cut your calories slowly and allow your body to adjust slowly. You don't need to drop down to "diet" calories overnight. What you do have to do is stick with it.

Thanks. That for me is the amazing thing. I am eating more, feel full and am losing. More real food I think. I admire those of you who are taking such good care of yourselves for the long haul and not just some quick fix. I feel like I am just figuring out something that tons of healthy people have always known. Slow learner I guess

Of course it is real! You are getting results by eating less sugar and more protein? That's pretty much what'll do the trick!

This is anecdotal: my whey isolate powder is about 86% protein, and a portion cup worth 130 calories takes up about 4X the volume of 120 calories of Dextrose (100% sugar). It's no wonder protein is more filling.
