Losing weight and nursing infant

Hi! A while ago I started myfitnesspal, and lost 15 pounds, then I moved and got off of it, but stayed at the new weight. Unfortunately, I still have 30 left to go before I hit my ideal weight. I am a very small person. I am five foot tall, currently weigh 145, and would like to be around 115, give or take a few. I just want to be healthy. When I first started, I was on a 1500 calorie diet. After I lost about ten pounds, and since I was nursing, I seemed to realize that my milk supply started to dwindle away to almost nothing.

Now that I am starting again, I thought I would add about 250 more calories to aim to only eat 1750 a day, but this seems like too much food to me. I feel guilty eating so much almost! It doesn't even seem like I am dieting! I am thinking about decreasing it to about 1700 and see how that goes.

Are there any other nursing moms out there who can give me advice on this. I am trying to exercise at least 4 times a week for 20 to 30 minutes, I am a very active housewife, and go for a walk pretty much everyday. How do I know that I am eating the right amount? How much exercise is too much?

  • I done the online calculator and got my TDEE, minus 20% for weight loss, then added 200 to that for breastfeeding. But my son is two, so if bub is still young, add more... Around 400-500 for newborn and go down slowly from there :)

I started with 500 and logged it as "exercise" That way as I lost weight it would slowly reduce the calories. I figured as my little one got older and eating other solids he would probably be using less calories. It worked for me while I was nursing.

my niece is breastfeeding too. She is consistently losing 2 pounds per week by eating 2100 calories per day. Her TDEE -20% (without factoring in breastfeeding) is 1600 and she added in 500 extra for nursing as per her docs recommendation. You are smaller than she is, but I see +500 for breastfeeding moms a lot. So, I would figure your TDEE -20% then add back 400-500 for nursing calories and test it for 4 weeks (less than that and you will have a true look at whether it works). Good luck to you!
