At what point should I add exercise?

I've only been going serious at the whole weight loss thing for about a week so far, and I haven't felt the confidence or the motivation yet to add in any physical activity. Last time I tried running, it wasn't pretty and I only managed about five minutes worth.
At what point did people start adding physical activity to their life? I figured I would get my eating regime down pat first and then add it in when I feel confident with my food choices- is this a good idea or a bad one?

Personally I'd say it's never too early to add a little something something to help speed up the process. It feels so much better to exercise and be productive!
And you don't necessarily have to just run outside either. There are plenty of cardio and strength work outs at the beginner level on the internet you can access for free. c:
Just don't add too much too soon. Don't wanna burn out.0 -
Great advice0

I say add it right away. Doesn't have to be anything major - just active. Go for a walk, play outside. When you get more confident, step it up a notch.0

I started it at 213 pounds and being a severe asthmatic, you dont have to run 5 miles your first day. Start slow with walking and then work from there
I am on week 5 of Zombies 5k training - its a couch to 5k app and its great - starts you very very slow and works you into running a 5k in 8 weeks, and it has a zombie story line/ zombies chasing you!
30 day shred is a great place to start as well0 -
Aww man I know you guys are right, but it's WINTER here... so hard to stay peppy and energetic when it's freezing and rainy and dark all day!0
-
Thanks for the advice I've seen a lot of people mention 30 day shred... what is it, exactly? Is it an online thing?0

Add it now. Exercise should be a part of your lifestyle and there's no such thing as 'too little' as long as you are doing something.
I have no confidence to exercise in public either unless it's walking. I do everything at home. Go on youtube and search for workouts, there's so much out there. Start small though because you don't want to put yourself off.0 -
I started in front of the TV - doing bodyweight exercises and some light hand weights, and jogging on the spot.0

Youtube it - its a Jillian Micheals workout - free on youtube0 -
The best time to start exercising is yesterday!
Given that increasing your exercise level is likely to also increase your appetite (you need to fuel your workouts) you should consider it a fitness & health bonus rather than just in terms of weight loss. Good luck!0 -
Hello! Not going to repeat everyone, but calisthenics are easy, beneficial, self paced, and easy to add to an "in house" routine when weather doesn't like to cooperate. Maybe a bit before bed, or first thing, or afternoon in place of a nap (^^,) Just another option.
Good luck!

It's winter where I am too! But I love running and will still continue running in the cold. You just need the right clothing and getting used to breathing in cold air while running. I would suggest you try the c25km app (couch 2 5km). It's made for people with no running experience. I used to hate running in the cold but now I absolutely love doing a 6km run. Haven't ran in a few days because it's my exam period, but I'll definitely be going full on at the end of next week0

Building muscle through working out can make it easier to eat for maintenance (or weight loss) because muscle cells burn more energy/weight than fat cells do. Also, strength training can apparently increase your effective metabolism for some hours after you have finished your workout.
But at the end of the day I think that it's important to do whatever you can stick at. This isn't a race and you don't have anything to prove to anyone (except maybe yourself). If your goal is weight loss and you don't want to do exercise then that just means you'll need to be diligent about sticking to your caloric deficit more strictly. If you prefer that over working out... go for it!
You need to make choices that you are happy with. Nobody else can tell you what is best for you, they can only help to provide you with information about your options.0 -
Today would be a good day. Just start by going for a walk.0

The first day of exercise is always the hardest, I recall joining a gym and attending my first class. BUT you won't regret starting exercise. Try 30mins of walking, and build from there. It will help your weight loss but will also make you feel amazing0

Start exercise as soon as possible, start small and build up. Go for a walk, or start doing fitness DVDs. That is what I do when I can't afford the fuel to get to the gym, or I have a lack of body confidence - which happens a lot! The more you do, the easier it becomes, and eventually you will come to enjoy it :-)
Well done you for getting started!0 -
That's probably a good idea getting the food part down. I feel I done it the more complicated way as I've been working out every day pretty much since the start of the year and just ate homely food and it seems it just kept my weight consistent and now I'm having a hard time eating as strict as I can to lose weight because there is only so much exercise I can fit in realistically!0

I started with exercise. Compared to food it's quite simple, just get your heartrate up and your doing yourself a favour.
Plus it'll give you an incentive to keep eating well.0 -

I started exercise & eating right on the same day. 501 days ago0

Winter here as well. There are soooooo many things you can do INSIDE. Trust me. I'm a runner & no way I can run in winter, my knees & back wont allow it in the cold. SO I do walk at home.... for 10km.
Do this video 6 times for 10km. Do it with some force to really get going.

In my past attempts with weight loss, I always started watching my intake and exercising. I never stuck with it.. (I was sore, or the scale slowed because of the exercise and I gave up) When I started here, I focused on eating first. I lost my first 20lbs without a stitch of exercise. I added walking after that.. then I was feeling great and losing weight and then I added a fitness class 3 times a week.
I say add the exercise when you're ready. If you're going to start the 30 Day Shred, be prepared for an butt-kicking, I attempted it at the beginning, and then again last week. It's pretty tough!0 -

There are always reasons why we *can't* make a change - it's winter, it's summer, it's too hot, it's raining, I don't have time, i'm too fat, i don't have the right workout clothes... Find 30 minutes right now (like, i don't know, turn off the computer?) and start. start slowly (if you never work out), but start. yoga is a good place to start, just to get your body moving and do the breathing thing correctly. Then look at some of the online programs like Jillian michaels. or just take a walk (it's raining? so walk in a mall. Or walk up and down a few flights of stairs). find out if there is a public pool nearby and go swimming 1-2 times a week. my sister used to march and jog around her house when their treadmill died.0 -
Everyone has nailed it. Add it. Add it now. I know it's winter there, and sometimes the motivation can be tough. But do something. It doesn't have to be glamorous. No one is expecting you to start exercising by hitting the gym with a 3 hour run and a 4 hour weightlifting session. Start slowly. Even if it is only walking. Walk around the neighborhood where you live. Rob a bank and outrun the cops (no, scratch that one, it isn't a good idea). Just something. 10 minutes, 15 minutes. Whatever. Those will be 50, 75, 100 calories less you will have in your life. And you will slowly build up. So by the time spring comes which will be here soon enough, you will be ready to kick it into high gear. Because it doesn't stay winter forever. It just seems like it does.0

Start with a 15 0r 20 minute walk. It is more than you are getting now. Then increase your walks. When the feeling hits, jog for a few feet. Then increase that if you like. Watch out for slippery spots. Or just go "mall walking"0
