In need of help

Hello all,
This is my first post in this community so allow me to introduce myself, I'm 25 years old, 6'2 230lbs and way out of shape. I own a bagel store in Long Island, NY and work 7 days a week, no exceptions. I have recently decided to finally get in shape for the first time in my life (been yoyoing for years!) So I have been experimenting with different types of exercise whether it be interval cadrio, weight training, kettlebells, and anything else I can research and try. What I'm having a hard time with is my recovery. Being that my work day is at least 10-12 hrs long, I'm already quite tired by time I get to work out, and I don't have a day off so it doesn't make it any easier. Its been about 2 weeks since I started training and each day I'm just so exhausted and I fear a lack a progress. People tell me I need to take a day off, or I need to hire more staff, but anyone who knows anything about getting a small business off the ground knows that's just not going to happen right now... so here I am, overweight and trying, but just shot.

Are you eating enough for all of your activity level? That could help your energy level over all.

I know you work A LOT (and we commend you), but maybe you should choose a time before you shift, or even during (like break time?) Split your exercises if you have to. 10-15 minutes at a time. There are things like "10 Minute Trainer" DVDs that work with HIIT and resistance training.
All you need to do is incorporate ANY sort of cardio and ANY sort of resistance/weight training/lifting anywhere from 3-5 times a week. 3 times a week may be more incorporate-able for you!
Just remember (and I only say this to motivate, not to slate): There will always be someone more busy than you working out right now!
Good luck, OP! :flowerforyou:0 -
You are a busy person!
Maybe you could start out doing Jillian Michael's 30 DS at home before you go to work. It's about a 25 minute workout and it gets results. Then you could shower and go to work. Eventually your body will get used to this and you can up the intensity and length of your workouts.0 -
Welcome!
It doesn't really seem to make sense but adding exercise will actually give you more energy.
I find that running after a long day is a great stress reliever. I'm doing the couch to 5k program, and I could not recommend it more.
Whatever you do if you stick with it long enough it will get easier.0 -
I agree that you need to check how much you are eating even before you factor in your exercise. You are a big guy (hi there!) and presumably on your feet for at least 8 of those hours - you need to be eating a good amount to fuel all that. I used http://iifym.com/tdee-calculator/ and plugged in your stats. It says that your TDEE is between 3750 and 4000 cals a day to maintain the weight you are at. if you are not eating at least 2800, you will be feeling tired and hungry and cranky. Don't feed that inner yo-yo by trying to eat as little as possible - make food your friend.
There are lots of ways to get your exercise in - can you walk (part of the way) to work? Do that really fast. 10 minutes alone? Get out a skipping rope and get jumping. Lift heavy stuff.
Good for you though getting started and good luck on the journey of a lifetime!0 -
Welcome fellow long islander!!!! Where is your store?0

Perhaps you can change up your workout --- you don't necessarily have to have a continual burn over a extended period with your workout. Studies have proven that you can actually do several 10 minute workouts each day, throughout the day. This should help you in putting in the time you want and need for success! I imagine owning a bagel store and having access to all of those bagels could be difficult as well. Good luck to you.0

WOW! What great responses and so quickly! I have thought about exercising before work, but I start around 4am everyday so I wouldn't want to sacrifice any of the sleep that I can get. I definitely might not be eating enough. Ill have to start tracking my calories a little closer.
and to the other LIer, my store is in Mt Sinai0
