Help I need a decent pedometer

My pedometer readings for my mid-morning walk; Time:55mins @ moderate pace (3.0 mph) = 6,311 steps - 4,733 km = 189.33

These are the readings I got from my pedometer (a cheapie I bought to get me started), time was according to my phone. I was walking at a (3.0 mph) moderate pace without a dog...

MFP's calculations are different so I assume my pedometer is not too acurate.

Any recommendations on a good quality pedometer would be much appreciated.

It may not be your pedometer. I find that the MFP calorie counts for exercise are too high. But, I have the Omron HJ-112 and love it. It is inexpensive and easy to use. The only problem is the clip sometimes falls off, but there is a leash so it doesn't fall to the ground.

Below are some 4 links which are available over internet for calculation of walking calorie burn. If you look at them, none are showing same value, everyone has a different method of calculation.

Calorie Burned for 160 lbs person, walking 60 minutes @ 3 mph
    251 CALORIES as per http://www.fatsecret.com/fitness/walking-(moderate)-3-mph
    247 CALORIES as per http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/calories_burned.asp
    239 CALORIES as per http://www.everydayhealth.com/Calories-Burned-Walking.htm
225 CALORIES as per http://www.myfitnesspal.com/exercise/lookup (log out and then check this link)

(In MFP they have your weight already populated and do calculation based on that value).

I do not think you will be needing a new pedometer, the one you have shows the 6311 steps @ 3 mph and covers around 2.94 miles in 55 minutes which is accurate taking your stride length at 2.54 feet.

The only cross check I would do, is mapping my walking route in google maps (using directions - walk) and try to verify that I had actually walked the 2.94 miles which I am supposed to as per the pedometer. If not, you can always adjust the Stride length (2.54 feet) to a more accurate value.

I have had several cheapies, but I won an Omron HJ-321 pedometer as part of a work fitness challege that retails for $15 - $20, and I LOVE IT! It's the simplest, easiest to use, most sensitive and accurate pedometer I've ever used once it was calibrated to my stride length. I highly recommend it!

If you have a smartphone, you can always look for a pedometer on there??

Off topic, but thank you for this. Somehow it had never occurred to me to use google to find the length of my walking routes!

I've used an Omron for years (about $20), but got the Fitbit a few years ago ($100) ... you've had several recommendations for it, and I suggest it to anyone who is willing to spend a little extra. The graphs are great, you can SEE your activity and it's very motivating. It's also great in that you don't have to write anything down, it all syncs automatically with your computer/phone AND with MFP. There are several "reward" fitness sites (Earndid, Everymove, Achievemint ... even Walgreens Rewards) that you can link your Fitbit too and then just forget about until you earn a reward... fun and motivating! I wear my Fitbit 24/7 (take it off for showers) and it gives you a pretty good reading on your day!

But your cheapy doesn't sound too far off - a usual estimate is 2000 steps=1mile ... 3mph=3miles in your 55 mile walk.

Thanks you for all of your input. As much as I would LOVE a fitbit, it just doesn't fit into my budget. I will be checking out the Omron.
