NON-SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE - rant..

I love my grandpa to death but he loves ice cream. He literally just brought home two large tubs, one small tub, and two bar boxes of ice cream.

This is why I give up and fall off the wagon every time. I hate it.

And there really is no such thing as eating ice cream in moderation because I have no will power to stop adding scoops.

I mean I don't crave it if it's not in the house... I don't really even like ice cream because it makes me sick, but I still eat it.

UGH. I don't want to fall off the wagon more than I have already today.

This sucks.. sorry for the rant.

  • I know how that is. I HATE IT. My weaknesses are Lays potato chips and Krispy Kreme donuts. My dad brings both in all the time.
My secret weapon is keeping a constant stash of better alternatives that I like MORE than the other stuff--if I absolutely can't avoid coming home without filling myself with something healthier first.
For example, I prefer pop-chips of just about any flavor to counter the Lays. Weight watchers also makes really good products--muffins of doom---for when I'm craving sweats. Since ice cream is your weakness, I'll tell you that they have nicely proportioned bags of ice cream--you won't have to worry about scoops. It's only about 100 calories a bar for my favorite.
My favorite is dark chocolate plus dulce de leche. My boyfriend even likes it, and he DETESTS anything considered diet or healthy. I would also look into Skinny Cow for toppings and spreads or Blue Bunny brands for some ice cream alternatives. I bet you can find a substitute that won't make you sick. It does not necessarily have to be ice cream, just more rewarding than going for the old stuff.

P.S. I don't know if you're lactose intolerant or what makes you ill when you eat ice cream. All I know is that my niece is allergic to eggs and dairy, yet was able to have her cupcakes and eat them too. I just had to use substitutes to make her food, which I now prefer.

I literally have the same mindset as you -- I even have a stash of low cal rice chips for moments like this, but I don't know how to resist it. I actually feel completely ridiculous while writing because I had a small bowl of it (which is actually good compared to my usual large bowl, and I didn't even eat all of the small bowl.) It just made me feel so crappy that I talked myself out of finishing it.

I used to love all those low cal ice creams but my grandpa only gets the tubs because they are super cheap! Literally $1.50 on sale days, which doesn't compete with anything else apparently.

I've tried purchasing alternatives for myself but I have an autistic brother who thinks all the food in this house is his lol and I obviously can't deny him a snack. But that just puts me in a hard place.

Basically, I wish ice cream didn't exist lol.
  • I hate to say it--I'd either buy enough snacks for both of you, or violently protect my stash. YOU CAN LITERALLY EAT ANYTHING YOU WANT SO EAT GRANDAD'S STUFF. *Foams*

I feel you. I have a whole house full of peeps who load my house full of bad for you foods & I am also having a hard time. You are in my prayers. Joyce Meyer said, If a man was holding a gun to your head and told you he would kill you if you ate the ice cream, would you still eat the ice cream. No. So I try to imagine a gun at my head and pray for God to help me and one day at a time ;D My mom said Only you can put the spoon or fork to your mouth, no one else, You have the power. No one else. So no matter what foods are around, you have the power to choose not to touch it. We can do this! Much love & blessings to you!

and also it's ok if we slip occasionally...if we didn't we wouldn't be human. What matters is that we pick ourselves up and never give up! And keep on keeping on ;D

I'll be gentle, but... your grandad buys icecream, because he loves icecream... how is this non-supportive? It can be very easy to get so wrapped up in our lifestyle change that we assume it should bleed over to others, but remember - YOU have changed your lifestyle. YOU have imposed new rules and restrictions on yourself.

Why should poor old Grandad miss out on his icecream? Maybe try to think of it as HIS, so you don't help yourself?

Tell him and everyone around you that you are trying to lose weight. Everyone around me knows that I'm trying. So when I go for that twix ice cream bar in the supermarket, they'll give me this judgemental look ( like are you supposed to be eating that). Ive had my little brother tell me when I sat in the car that the whole car went down. The truth hurts but after that I didn't eat anything the rest of the day. If you don't want to say you're tyring to lose weight, then tell them you're on a diet and you can't eat that stuff. Something that I do.....when I start to tell myself that I'm hungry when I'm not, I'll get some warm water and drink until I'm full of water. It doesn't last long but it helps. Also eat a peppermint, the hard kind, or mint gum or brush your teeth. Food is less enjoyable when you have that mint aftertaste

Mmmm It's quite simple actually ^^.

I guess knowing that the icecream is present.. serves as a "stimulant" for you to eat it ( regardless if you're feeling it or not).

For example, the factor is ICE CREAM in your case.

What I'd do is focus on the ice cream. You KNOW you're going to psychologically eat it if it's physically present and available, that fact is NOT going to change.. just accept that first.

So make little goals for yourself to eat LESS ice cream in general.. without depriving yourself completely.

    Examples:
-every two days.. reduce 1 scoop of icecream
    - buy a food scale and only measure out ___ g of icecream you're allowed to eat (extreme I know) Or even use a measure cup because you can guage HOW much calories you're eating out of that tub!

    What works for me:
I'd slowly taper off of ICE CREAM.. but never eliminate it from my diet.

    My suggestion:
Fill your stomach with nutrient dense foods.. things with fibre also helps, it keeps your stomach satied and full. BUT ALSO.. in combination.. HAVING A REALLY GOOD WORKOUT (I'M talking about the ones that you are PROUD of), would REALLY deter you from adding that "extra" scoop of icecream that you would normally add trust me.

    It's like ..
Before the workout: "I intend to eat 6 scoops of icecream later..."
After a GREAT workout: "This icecream does NOT seem to be worth it... maybe i'll just have 2 instead.. "

*You could obviously eliminate it completely, but based on what you've mentioned .. that's not going to be effective nor efficient in the long term.
