You really don't need any unless you're having a trouble meeting various macros/micros and need to supplement0 -
You don't have to take any. Most supplements are useless and unproven.
Protein shakes are helpful to meet protein goals but not necessary. You can do that with food if you want. Other than helping fi the protein macro, protein shakes offer no other benefit. So basically, use if you want/like, but you don't have to.0 -
The only supplements I take ate fish oil capsules(because I hate eating fish) so I need them to get omega 3, and a multivitamin. I eat 150g of protein a day, and it all comes from chicken, beef, peanut butter, and dairy.0

Unless you're looking to become an elite athlete (I'm certainly not), supplements are a waste of money and even if you ARE looking to become an elite athlete, there's a lot of trash out there which isn't worth your time.
I'm a vegetarian, so I've been taking a Hemp based protein supplement to help build muscle. But really, if I weren't trying to build muscle I would get plenty of protein in my diet (contrary to popular belief, it's not that hard to get protein in a veggie diet).
Hope that helps!0 -
I take a multivitamin daily, but it is 100% not necessary. Chances are I am (literally) peeing my money away. Protein shakes are great if you need more protein, but I would make my own. Buy some protein powder (a 5lb tub of Optimum Nutrition powder is 55 bucks, or thereabouts), put a scoop of that, some liquid (I use a cup of unsweetened almond milk), and whatever else you want (a cup of frozen berries is super awesome). It will be a) cheaper than any protein drink you can buy, and b) way better for you. No crap in there you don't want.0

I'll throw in my vote for a multivitamin and fish oil as well. Multivitamin, Fish Oil are pretty much staples for most people's nutrition and fitness program. If you have a diverse, healthy diet, you probably don't need either. I tend to eat the same foods (and I'm also not a fan of fish), so I take them just to ensure that I'm getting all the various micronutrients and phytonutrients available that could be beneficial to my fitness program and overall nutrition. I'm suspicious of most grocery store brands (moreso with the multivitamins), so I order mine online when I order my whey protein. I'm currently trying out Optimum's multi and fish oil.
Speaking of protein, in the past, I leaned pretty heavy on whey protein (which I consider to be powdered food, not really a supplement), and my preference is Optimum Nutrition Extreme Milk Chocolate. But I've gotten away from consuming it too much. I think it's got its place as a short term nutrition strategy. But now, I'll have this just as a snack a couple of hours before working out and an immediate post-workout snack. I'll also have a scoop of Casein Protein (Xtreme Formulations) after my heavy workout days right before bed, if I have the calories available.
Good luck on your new program! Hope it works out well for you!0 -
