So if Abortion were struck down by SCOTUS....

would a celebratory thread be allowed? Just curious. Not taking a side, but it does seem MFP's rules are a bit flexible.

I would think that either should be allowed. I don't think the problem is subject matter, but rather people who cannot behave appropriately when expressing their views.

There is no place for civility in online discussion forums. Everybody knows that.
And yes, it should be allowed. If a person disagrees with a thread, they are under no obligation to enter it. Just don't click it. If you want to disagree, do so respectively. After all, at the end of the day, we're not going to change anyone's mind by simply banging on a keyboard. Why can't grown adults discuss a divisive issue if they can do it in a manner that is non-threatening or uncivilized?

Edit to add: Obviously, being a private site, MFP is free to set their rules as they wish. I just think some of their discussion board rules could stand to be changed :-)

^This. With controversial topics, people usually resort to anger and name calling and it's not pretty. Topics like gay marriage and abortion are emotional topics which is why it is hard to have a civilized debate, and pointless in my view, because both sides are so deeply rooted in their beliefs that no amount of debating will change anybody's mind. Just my 2 cents...

The butthurt runs much too freely to allow for civilized conversation on most topics within the forums...it's not restricted to just topics which are considered controversial.

Three topics that are useless to discuss with the general public:

    Abortion
    Politics
    Religion

Round and round you'll go for hours and hours with no resolution. Sounds like a blast.

I think we know how this will end. If I started a topic that said "USA is dumb for striking down DOMA" it would be over in 5 seconds.

Yes it would be. As would any other thread the mods dont agree with.

Pretty much. And you will be shamed by all of mfp for being a rational intelligent person.

Well it would be over as soon as a moderator discovered the thread and deemed in lock worthy. Humorously this thread that you have started here is also political and divisive so clearly your own objects are a bit flexible.

Personally I think people should be allowed to create any thread that they want and anyone should be allowed to respond in any way that they see fit. Of course this is only referring to the content of the post themselves. If someone were to write a program that simply spammed a thread with gibberish as a way of making sure nobody could talk about a topic then I would be against that.

I have found that when you discuss certain subjects and provide facts that oppose an opinion you are accused of attacking the person with a different opinion. There is no nice way to argue opinions

I think MFP rules are pretty clear about these topics. Take it to our debate group! We have knock down, drag out debates there. And guess what. We don't report each other and get all butthurt there.

On second thought since you worded this question with "would" it be allowed I suppose the answer is a definitive "no" because the thread that you were complaining about was locked for being a political topic.

The question of whether or not it "should" be allowed is a completely different story. If you said should it be allowed my answer would be yes. A celebratory thread should be allowed even if I disagree with what they are celebrating.
