Over/Under has gotten me over 400 lbs. The more time you spend lifting, the stronger your grip will get (especially if you do rows, DLs, shrugs, cleans, etc regularly). My suggestion would be to use a double overhand grip until the bar becomes too heavy, and then switch to the over/under.

    Thanks again all.

    I'm doing Stronglifts 5 x 5. I know it's only 1 x 5, but I can only complete the 5 if i use 35 lb plates. I tried with 40 on each side... Couldn't do it.

I have always used gloves. My hands are too soft :flowerforyou:
I Climbed a Rockclimbing wall for the first time in my life, at the age of 44... Strength Training did that for me. :drinker:

So i should stick with 1 x 5 with 35 lbs plates and Grip train until i can move up? Big problem at my gym... no 2.5 lbs plates. Witch reminds me. I'm going to buy my own.

    Have a great day Pals!

Very good information and links :flowerforyou:

These are a regular part of my conditioning routine and really helps with the grip.

change your grip.. use the hook grip, wrap your fingers around your thumb. That will help. Also practice your grip by hanging on a pull up bar, playing on a rock climbing wall and doing what your doing, just more often.

I don't know why there is a lack of love for straps.

They don't actually hold the weight for you, they just assist, so reduce the load. If you relaxed your grip whilst using straps, you would still dump the bar!

If you're going to compete in a strength sport, then you need to get your grip strength up, but you may still find straps useful for accessory exercises. If you're not competing, straps can help you work areas that you otherwise struggle with, because of lack of grip strength, particularly for women who tend to show a larger disparity between upper and lower body strength.

I wouldn't let a lack of grip strength stop a big lift like a deadlift, I would use straps, but work on my grip strength also. Just to add to this point, I don't think its the same as using a belt to mask a weak core or similar, as a weak grip is unlikely to risk injury in the same way.

    Agreed.

I'm at 185# DL right now, and i think i might have to get some chalk. I think my grip is strong enough to get at least to 200, but the sweaty hands is getting to be a problem with the weight i'm lifting.

    Time to chalk up.

    Definitely watching this one.

I've got a naturally crappy grip (short fingers - I can't even do a hook grip). I can double overhand to 315, but have to switch to mixed grip if I have to do reps, and anything nearing 400 and over I have to use straps. This makes for a problem in my sport, as I'm spinning in a circle trying to hold onto a 56 lb weight with one hand - that ends up being the equivalent of trying to hold 200 lbs if I spin as fast as possible, and I've lost my grip a few times.

I'm going to work on farmer's walks and sustained holds to see if I can improve my grip. I'm in my off season now, so I don't have to go for the giant lifts as much.
