Hello lovely people,
I had a freebie session with a PT at my gym yesterday. Im glad I didn't pay for it because her face when I said I wanted to use heavy weights was a picture, she quite obviously had no idea what to suggest so after a bit of encouragement from me she suggested that I do this (sorry, forget the names for the last two):
Military press
Lateral raises
Something a bit like a chest press but standing up
Something a bit like a chest fly but standing up.
She said 'how many reps and sets do you want to do?' (I thought this odd, her being the PT and all) I suggested 5x5 with the heaviest weight I could lift safely for that number of sets.
When I said 'what about me legs?' she showed me the leg extension and leg curl machine and pointed out that I do a decent amount of cardio so my legs shouldn't go chickeny.
Im fairly unimpressed with the PT, especially after reading so many threads on here giving great advice about weights. So,
Please could you lovely people suggest a few more exercises to help me increase my all over strength?
I prefer using dumbells, mainly because I rarely am at the gym when any of the bars are free!
I usually do at least 30 mins cardio (running, or rowing- occasionally elliptical) as well, but do weights in between.
Many thanks in advance :-)

She sounds like a complete waste of space if you ask me!
This is why i have done so much better loosing weight by myself without "expert one to one guidance". Read one of the excellent manuals suggested on MFP (Stronglifts, NROLFW etc they all do the same job.) Watch form videos on YouTube, get to the gym before all the barbell hogs get there if you can and lift. Start light (as is the general recommendation) and lift lift lift til you can't lift no more.0 -
Thanks Graelwyn- I have had a look through the thread- will try a few of those this evening :-)
James- I reckon you are right-youtube it is, and perhaps I will try early mornings to get a look in on the barbell!
thanks :-)0 -
jefit.com has a lot of good, premade routines for different muscle groups and experience levels. It's a fairly good resource to start with as well.0
