OP, look I know you think you're brilliant and have a better handle on medicine than your doctor, but you don't. If you're confused by what he/she has done, then it is your responsibility as a patient to ask. He/she can't help you if you don't ask and then listen to the answers provided.

This. I am a little forgetful, so I write down questions before each appointment. And, I will not stick with a doctor who won't take at least 7-10 mins each appointment to address my questions.

In the UK most referrals will be bounced back by the department if the proper bloods to make sure it is the correct course of action have not been done. Even if they are 99% certain, that 1% would be a waste of the specialists time and in some cases could be dangerous for the patient and cause costly legal procedings.

It sounds to me like your doctor is following the correct procedure and looking out for your best interests.

You know your body. If you believe it's a problem with your back (i.e. a pinched nerve), go to a chiropractor; don't wait for your doctor to refer you, because they usually won't. Yes, you'll have to pay for it, but they don't usually charge too much (I get adjustments for $30), and if that fixes the problem, it'll be worth the money. My chiropractor is worth his weight in gold; he fixes me up when nothing else will.

And if an adjustment or two doesn't fix the problem, you'll know that your doctor just might know what he's talking about...

A chiropractor? I wouldn't send my worst enemy to a chiroquackter.......to the OP wait for the referral to a physio if that's what you really do need. Your family doctor actually studied medicine......

Any time I see my primary doc for a checkup he orders a crap ton of labs...and I'm grateful that he does! Blood work often unravels mysteries...so hang in there and get your labs done.

What is the point of posting this? You have obviously already diagnosed yourself. As a nurse I can tell you that getting those tests done are far more important than heading straight to physio, which could be detrimental if they don't know what is wrong with you. And to the people telling you that you may need an adjustment or that is may be a pinched nerve that isn't helpful. Nobody on here has assessed this person. What did you expect ? People to come in here and agree with you that your Dr is an idiot and that you are brilliant for diagnosing yourself ?

My doctor is an idiot, i have been getting pins and needles in my arms and my feet. i know its coming from my neck/back and wanted him to refer me for physio so i could get it free via my health insurance.
He has refered me to have my bloods checked, but need to go whilst fasting. does he think because i am peri menopausal that i am neurotic. Left without any thing. I am running 10k on saturday any advice.
    :grumble:

Interesting that just because your doctor is being thorough and doesn't agree right away with your home diagnosis that he's an "idiot". We go to doctors for a reason - they know more than us.

If you're uncomfortable with what your doctor suggests, get a new doctor. There are plenty of incompetent doctors practicing medicine.

I think it's probably the case that he wants to rule out something more serious before referring you to a physio. You're probably right that it's just from something like a pinched nerve, but it's a doctor's responsibility to rule out more serious conditions that could cause the same symptoms first.

    This ^^

I am in pain from my neck at the moment so i am frustrated, i have to wait till Monday for blood tests to be done so a weekend of pain and no exercise.

If you feel you have a pinched nerve, why not go to a Chiropractor for an adjustment?

I highly doubt your doctor paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for schooling to learn to be a professional idiot.

That being said, your doctor absolutely took the best course of action in determining that there are no underlying causes that may be CONTRIBUTING to your back/neck pain. You may be looking at certain vitamin/mineral deficiencies, arthritis pain (which can be inflamed by whacked-out blood sugar), and many other factors. In short, just because your back hurts doesn't mean the problem is your back.

My point exactly. I guess she just wanted the doctor to confirm her diagnosis, write up the prescription for the physio and then later down the road when it is something more seriously, hence law suit for doctor's misdiagnosing the problem.

To everyone suggesting a chiropractor for a pinched nerve, stop. If it is a pinched nerve, manipulation is not the answer, in fact it could make things worse. A physical therapist can provide a thorough examination to determine the source of the pins and needles and provide a treatment plan to address the issue instead of just doing manipulation.

I commend you for seeking out physical therapy, though I agree that the doctor is likely just trying to rule out other causes. I would continue to request a referral to physical therapy following the blood test.

I think you would have every right to call your dr an idiot if you were getting tests done, and s/he did this ....

I work at a doctor's office in the referral department. A doctor shouldn't just refer you out before doing any blood work unless he knows without a doubt what is going on with you. Some things have very similar symptoms. Also, I don't know where you live but some insurance require that testing and treatments be tried before referring to a specialist or they won't approve it and you'll be stuck with the bill.

when complaining to her doctor about back pain, my neighbor got told she had a slipped disc. now, several months and a bunch of pain meds later, it turns out she has stage 4 cancer in her GI tract.

i think you should be happy your doctor is being thorough.

I'm moving soon, so it's sort of irrelevant.
