Protein powder while trying to lose weight

Hey guys, i'm on the 3rd week of my 1st month of Insanity, and I would like to start drinking some protein powder. I obviously do NOT want to get bigger or bulk up, but instead I want to lose 25 pounds. I was looking in to IsoBolic by Nutrabolics, and the reviews were awesome and I like the ingredients. I like IsoBolic because it contains whey, casein and egg protein (i've never tried any protein powders before though). But, is this protein powder solely for bullking up and creating mass? Because that is the last thing I want to do. I want to get lean and toned, but definitely do not want to gain any weight. Does anybody recommend any other powders? Or is IsoBolic okay for me? Thanks!

protein powder is for getting enough protein in when you don't get enough protein from real food. Nothing more, nothing less.
  • I definitely do not get enough protein in my diet, which is why I want to drink protein powder lol. Also, I want to help with my soreness after workouts. I just don't want to bulk up...
Also, when should I be taking the powder? Right after my workouts?

This! It's all about meeting those macros.

I have tried many protein powders, I learned most of them are not good for you and they contain glucose aka sugar! If you're trying to lose weight sugar won't help much!! One of the best protein powders out there which I've been using for a couple years now is Kaizen Natural Whey; it contains natural ingredients, is sweetened with stevia, and it tastes great.

According to your profile you are female... you will not bulk up without drugs. So, stop worrying about bulking up because it is impossible. Protien powder won't make you gain muscle. Proper eating, and lifting heavy does. Protein powder will not make you add weight.... eating more than your TDEE will.

For protein powder, I prefer to get protein from real food instead of a processed powder. If you cannot reach your protein goals through real food alone have a protein shake whenever it's best for your daily schedule.

Sugar won't stop you from losing weight provided you are in a calorie deficit.

I personally would go for a protein powder with real sugar instead of another processed version.

Yeah, I would definitely also go for a powder with real sugar. Don't want to be drinking anything with processed ingredients! IsoBolic contains 1g of sugar per serving

Whey protein itself is a processed ingredient.

Still doesn't matter as long as you're in a caloric deficit. Calories in/calories out.

OP - No protein powder is going to make you "bulk up."

    1) You (the average human being) can't really gain muscle mass without being in a caloric surplus (consuming more than your body uses).
    2) Even if you were in a caloric surplus, it's the surplus that makes you gain weight, not the protein powder itself.
    3) Protein powder is really just a convenient way to increase your protein consumption if you don't want to - or have a hard time - reaching your protein goals through "regular" food (like chicken, for example). It's also yummy (or can be - some are nasty).

You are right about sugar stopping you from losing weight, I get my sugar from real fruits. In regards to the protein powder it contains
-No artificial flavours, colours or sweeteners
    -Lactose-free
    -Gluten-free
    -No hormones, pesticides or GMOs

They sweeten it with natural stevia leaf extract.

I only drink this if I don't have time to cook and on the run!

The only thing that is going to make you bulk up and create mass is a calorie surplus. That's why all the skinny dudes at the gym guzzling protein powders are getting smaller. They're just not eating enough to bulk.

That doesn't explain how the twinkie diet helped a professor lose 27 lbs in 10 weeks, now does it.

I eat sugar. It's not good to eat excessive amounts of anything. But I assure you, sugar does not stop you from losing weight, I have a real sweet tooth and ate excessive amounts of sugary crap through all my life before I started eating a ton more after I discovered good cooking and gaining weight. I was always the skinny stick kid:

Unrelated but ironically, I put on weight when I dropped the sweet tooth. Now since I have my sweet tooth back:

Keep your sugars. Just try to make sure you fill up on nutritious things before you start thinking about oreos. As long as you eat below your energy expenditure, you'll lose.

As far as protein is concerned, I drink protein shakes fairly regularly these days.

This exactly. I drink 1-2 protein shakes a day (I struggle meeting daily requirements through real food) and I lift heavy 3-4 days a week and I am NOT bulking up, lol. I'm actually losing weight and making my muscles more defined.

I have added in PB2 to my morning smoothie. It gives some natural protein and is low in sugars, fat and salt. I find that it works for me. I am sensitive to dairy and to soy.
  • Thanks for the help everyone! I ordered IsoBolic protein powder. Hopefully it'll arrive soon lol. Should I drink the protein right after my workouts? (workout 2 times a day, mostly cardio).
