Hear coconut oil is very good for you. But it seems really calorific. I was wondering whether to add it to smoothies. Thoughts?

Extra Virgin Coconut oil is good for you(but since it's an oil, it's roughly the same calorie amount as all other oils, use sparingly). Some people cook with it (they swear it doesn't make things taste tropical), I add it to my morning coffee and slather myself in it. Can't.Get.Enough.

oil is oil, it's comparable to olive oil.

I use it a lot, but within reason like avocados, etc. I trade unhealthy fats for healthy fats

I read somewhere that the 'extra' is superfluous...

I bought some coconut oil and I fried one or two things in it, but mostly I've been making beauty products out of it!

As much as you want to put as long as you stay within your calorie goals and assuming you like it. It's oil. It's slightly different from other oils in that part of it is metabolized differently that other oils (MCL - medium chain lipids make up about 40% of most coconut oils and MCL are metabolized more like carbohydrates, ie quicker energy). It is still high calorie, 9 cal/g.

I discovered my favourite ice cream has coconut oil in it. Does that make it a health food?

There are plenty of reasons TO use coconut oil. Coconut oil is high in fiber. I don't buy into the oil pulling, but if you're going to use coconut oil in cooking, use the EFA Gold...the flavor is awesome.

For hair and skin care, I usually use the cheaper stuff you can find at the local grocer.

Yes, add it to smoothies, oatmeal, eggs, whatever. Just make sure it fits.

I use it for my hair and skin as well.

it seems like a good idea to sub for butter but i sort of reject a lot of suppliments.
like, everything they say is good is bad next week. so eat a varied diet of legit healthy foods without OD'ing on this week's fad.
besides, your body is this delicate chemistry set, if you don't want to poo all crazy or break out i wouldn't start messing with it too hard.

High in fiber? It has exactly 0 g of fiber in a 50 gallon barrel of coconut oil.
