Milk Free

We have to be completely milk free for the most part because our son is allergic. I am really struggling to keep myself motivated to cook every night or every other night and make healthy meals.

My husband and I both have always been thin and have never had to work at staying fit and in shape, until the little ones came along. We both gained weight and have struggled to get it off and keep it off. For our anniversary we both decided to get in shape and get healthy, for ourselves, each other, and the kids. My husband has lost over 10 pounds already and I've only lost a few.

We're determined to make this work but like I said, we're struggling to keep our meals milk free. Does anyone have any suggestions on healthy, milk free meals that both adults and young kids (3 & 4) will all enjoy?

Can't help with ideas, but why not try a substitute like almond or soy milk? Or even coconut even though it's higher in calories?

EDIT: Soy not soja, sorry :noway:

You can substitute milk with rice/soy/almond/etc milk.

For me, it's so easy. I just replace anything that requires milk with almond or coconut milk. These two are the healthiest forms. Try to stay away from soy as it is a GMO.

Thanks guys, we typically do but my hubby doesn't like the taste of anything other than regular milk. So, he wants to try to not have to substitute. I hope that made sense.

Well, as was already suggested, you can substitute cow's milk for a non-dairy alternative. I can't have milk and I buy almond milk - I find it tastes best. My children who can drink cow's milk actually seem to like almond milk just as much if not more. The brands I buy are Silk true almond or Nature's choice Almond milk in original flavour for cooking and sometimes in chocolate because chocolate is awesome.
You can also make some substitutions like with mashed potatoes; you can easily make them dairy free by not draining all of the water you boil them in and adding some olive oil while mashing them, or use some almond milk. Try just doing a search on the google for dairy free meals, or dairy substitutions. It's a bit of a challenge but you can do it.

Thanks! I've been trying to tell the hubby that we need to get the little guy away from soy because it's not great for him. He definitely likes almond better than soy and I've convinced him so far to do 1/2 and 1/2 so I'm slowly working the almond into his diet over the soy. Now if I can just convince him that it's okay for me to cook with almond or coconut milk we'll be good. One of his friends has him convinced that he should try the Paleo diet but I'm not so sure.

What kind of meals are you making that all require milk? Or all you talking about all diary that you're trying to avoid?

You know it sort of sounds like your husband just needs to suck it up.

It's actually the milk protein that he's allergic to. While it's not in all dairy, it's actually in a lot of other stuff. It's a rather large pain. However, I think if I can substitute almond for regular milk and cook from scratch it won't be such a daunting task.
