Hi all

I must be having a brain freeze but I am low carbing and picking up an Atkins bar
The label reads only 2 net carbs
The info on the back is as follows:

Total Carbs 22g
Dietary fiber 10g
sugar alcohols 0g
sugars 1g
Protein 18g

what am i missing?
blonde moment perhaps..LOL

I never understood how they got their net carbs either.

It could be a misprint, it should read 12 Net carbs. The calculation for Net carbs is be done by taking total carbs and baking out fiber so 12 (22-10)

Kim- the net carbs on the Atkins bars are figured by how many net carbs actually affect the blood sugar of an individual; Atkins has tested these products on test groups and it has been proven that only x net carbs have affected the blood sugar.

Agreeing here. Or it could have been a misprint with the sugar alcohols... Perhaps it should have been 10 sugar alcohols to get to the 2net carbs.

Eitherway, the numbers on the nutrition info you posted don't add up the way Atkins says to do it (Total Carbs - Fiber - Sugar alcohols = net). You can verify some of the stuff by reading the ingredients.

I'll repeat myself again as someone that has been doing Atkins for over a year. This is taken directly from the Atkins website:

"Atkins science allows us to calculate Net Carbs in our products more accurately. In the case of Atkins bars, shakes and other products, the glycemic (blood sugar) impact has been directly tested on volunteers, and the Net Carb count reflects the glycemic load test results. So you can rely on the accuracy of the stated Net Carb count."

Yep, they are subtracting out the glycerine as well since they don't consider it a sugar alcohol. It would make more sense if they broke it out and showed you how much glycerine was being subtracted like they do with Fiber and Sugar Alcohols.

I don't know why they don't, but from some reading I've done, Atkins will be changing their labeling in regards to the "net carb count" and it will read more like "atkins tested net carb count" etc etc so that people understand how the net carbs are figured.

I would say it's a person decision for sure, but I can let you know from personal experience that I've eaten them many a time over the course of the past year without any problems in weight loss.
The only other thing I would be concerned about is that since there is a lot of sugar alcohols in some of the bars, your system may not like that. Everyone's body does differently with the fake sweeteners.
Best of luck to you! :flowerforyou:

If you're not feeling the Atkins bars there's another variety - Doctor's brand "CarbRite" bars. They have fewer ingredients and IMO, taste 10 times better.

I don't like to rely on them, but they're pretty awesome to take on long car rides and whatnot.

Thanks..do they sell the carbrite bars at GNC?
I don't eat them often either but tomorrow we are going on a day trip and besides nuts and sting cheese it's nice to have something else to bring...

    thanks, kim
  • Most Bar makers do not count sugar alcohol in net carbs.

Beware! Unless you enjoy running, to the toilet, keep sugar alcohol intake to a minimum.
