I am overwhelmed with losing weight

 Hi,

I am overwhelmed with losing weight, its stressing me out, I live, breathe and sleep weight loss and reaching goal weight, not good but I can't help it. My clothes don't fit blah blah blah... seems to be the story of my life for the past two years. 30 pounds is what I need to lose to get my pretty clothes off the hangers and on my body. This is stressful I've never had a weight problem I guess pushing the big 50 next year could be a factor who knows and everything seems to stick. I am however a healthy eater yep its true I don't eat fast food haven't in over 30 years, I do however love chocolate. Will I be successful? I really truly hope MFP can help me, I am giving it a shot. Good luck to all of you other members and hat's off to all of you who are on the road to success.

  • I don't really get this. Weight loss isn't easy. But you seem to be setting yourself up for failure with a negative attitude. You can do it, be more positive.

Weight loss doesn't have to be so complicated. MFP is simply a tool that will help you set up a calorie goal and it is your responsibility to stick to that goal with your daily intake of food. With that, stay active. Don't be overly stressed or obsessive. This is a new lifestyle change and it will seem difficult in the beginning, but with time it will get more routine.

You could be me last year! I spent years getting more and more depressed and obsessed with my weight, and not believing I would ever lose any. Then I got an Android phone, and stumbled across the app, and downloaded it, and started tracking my calories. That was November. No plan, no diet or fitness regime, just cutting down. And right at the beginning, it all felt like a bit of a wild dream and it would never happen.

Here I am, 2 stone lighter, wearing clothes in a smaller dress size, and I've just eaten some chocolate!

If I can do it, ANYONE can do it! You just have to start, and stick with it

Oh, and don't imagine it's all plain sailing and easy - you'll have difficult times, you'll hit plateaux where your weight gets stuck and you'll think you should give up, and you'll have too much chocolate sometimes, and think you've derailed yourself - DON'T PANIC - you will get through it! We've all been there - come and grumble to us! Good luck!

What's to stress about? If your diet is already healthy and you simply need to cut back a little on calorie intake, it sounds like a grand slam to me. Remember: this isn't about depriving yourself with a quick fix diet. You make small changes that can be done for life, so it becomes a normal part of your daily routine. Keep a positive attitude. :)

I find it less overwhelming to set 5 lb goals or even just a small weekly goal. Having lots of little victories helps.

To the OP: We may be somewhat alike except I'm pushing 60 years old. I did well maintaining a reasonable weight until I hit my late 40s then for next 10 years or so got a little more "overwhelmed" each year as I gained about 6 pounds a year for each of the next 10 years. Yep...that adds up to 60 pounds I needed/wanted to lose when I finally decided I had to make a change. I've not come close to goal yet but I've been monitoring my calories and getting some exercise for only 6 weeks. I'm down 12 pounds and equally important (with so many more pounds to go) I'm starting to fit into my closet-full of too small clothing. Some sort of exercise is important. All I'm doing at this time is walking or going to the pool and treading water. About an hour a day.

Some days can be a struggle. I much prefer to sit in my recliner at watch the Food Network or Cooking Channel then cook up a storm. When you make your mind up to make a change, you'll make a change.

It does get a bit more difficult with age. And in my experience, exercise is a much bigger factor. This is the age when muscle and bone loss can occur so it's really important to workout regularly to prevent it. Eating is the easy part IMO.

At first trying to learn all that I needed to lose the weight and then maintain, I was obsessed too. There is nothing wrong with it. To cut down on the stress of it all try planning your day's meal ahead of time. I stressed myself out unneccesarily by asking myself what I was hungry for at the meal time, then when I logged it, a lot of times I was over or under on my counts and I definitely didn't have the macros correct. I started planning a day at a time and it's alot less stress.

Fast food is not neccesarily bad for you. I have Taco Bell for lunch once a week. A crunchy fresco taco has 140 cals. And plenty of non-fast foods can pack on the pounds it you over do it. Set reasonable goals, weigh everything before you eat it, and move more. It doesn't have to cause you stress.

Not eating fast food doesn't necessarily mean you're eating healthy or that you're not eating too much. Once you start tracking your food - and for your own sake, be honest and weigh/measure everything you can - you'll see exactly how much you're eating and where you need to make changes.

Try not to stress yourself out. Come up with a list of changes you need to make, new recipes to try, etc and set at least one goal per week. There's no need to revamp your whole diet and lifestyle TODAY - make babysteps that will stick.

I also agree with bcattoes (as I do frequently) about exercise. Don't think of getting active strictly as a weight loss tool because technically you can lose the weight without it. Instead think of it as a way towards a strong bones, stronger muscles, better balance, better flexibility - all leading to better contiued mobility and longevity as you age.

Most importantly, it's good for your cardio health and with heart disease being the #1 killer of women, that's a pretty big deal.

I know the feeling. I am 48 and the weight isn't coming off like it used to. In fact I have gained 25 lbs and I am trying to lose it. Since it doesn't come off as fast as it use to I get very unmotivated. I

I get this way too. I feel overwhelmed or feel dieting is oppressive. This is when I go simple. Take it back to doing one thing and doing it well. I go back to exercise. Make sure I'm getting a good 3, 4, 5 days a week. Doesn't mean I go hog wild with my food, but I ease up on the restrictions. I use the Tosca Reno eat clean books. I find it to me much more relaxing to try and get good food into me rather than restricting what I eat.

Don't throw up roadblocks before you even get there. Worry about today, and make good choices for yourself. You will get there.

Don't stress out about losing. Just focus on eating healthier and exercising. I think in the back of your mind you are so focused on getting those clothes on sooner than later. I had some nice things in my closet also but I cleaned my closet out and I will use losing as an incentive to buy new and better things. If you have a negative attitude about losing you will prolong your weight loss. I think we put timelines on ourselves to lose and then when you don't lose in that time you are stressed out, but who brought on the stress? No one but yourself because you are trying to do in in a certain time frame. Just enjoy your transformation it will come. Sometimes it comes in inches first just don't stress out about it.
