When to buy new clothes when you are losing weight?

Hey! After all that hard work to lose weight, you have finally become slimmer, more satisfied with your looks and body shape but you are still not at your goal weight/size etc. BAM! Another dilemma hits you. "Should I buy clothes to fit my size now, buy clothes in my goal size or wait till I reach my goal size?" Any suggestion for situations like this?
My clothes looks pretty big and floppy now but I am not sure if I should start buying new clothes or wait a little longer....

I personally go to Goodwill and buy a couple things in the size that fits at the moment super cheap. I'll wear my pants until the are literally falling off me and then I go. I can't afford a new wardrobe in every size so this works for me. Our Goodwill around here is clean, organized, great brands, and I buy alot with store tags still attached at a fraction of the cost!1

Good Will, Plato's Closet, Thrift Shops!! don't buy new till your to your goal weight!!!0

I buy every 4 sizes. I started at 54, bought new pants at 48, 44, and now 40. They have all been new clothes for work, because I need to look good for work. However, I started at 4XL and only just now bought new shirts and shorts for casual wear (XL and 40).
I plan to buy new work pants at 36 and 32 (my company supplies the shirts, and gives me new ones every time i drop a size), but I don't plan to buy new casual clothes until 32/Medium (or whatever my goal is).
Expensive, yes, but it feels good.0 -
When your pants fall down without unzipping them it's really time to get new ones. If you're halfway through losing weight, look at a nice thrift shop if you have one. I'm going thrift shopping for work clothes in early Aug.0

I am pear shaped, so my tops stayed about the same: started at M/L and ended at M/S. I just bought one intermediate pair of jeans because all other stuff were falling off me and stayed in them until I reached what was my GW back then. Of course my GW lowered a bit after that and the pants I bought are no longer tight, but they're still good enough.0

I've cycled my wardrobe through the local thrift shops several times in the last year. When I reach my goal weight, I'll think about buying NEW clothes.0

Yes. Go pop some tags at the thrift shop. :glasses:
Or try freecycle.
The only new clothes I ever buy are undies, jammies, and once in a while new running shoes. Everything else comes from reuse and recycle. It's the cheaper and more environmentally sound approach and blends well with my quasi-hippie existence. :flowerforyou:0 -
I agree that thrift stores are a good option but also look at the Ross/Marshall's/TJ Maxx type discount stores. I currently have no trousers that fit because I am very picky about good work clothes that I want to spend a lot of money on so I am going to Ross and Marshall's to get something that will work in the meantime. Dresses and skirts are better than pants for fitting at various sizes.0

I've lost just shy of 60lbs. This past weekend I went out and did some shopping for the first time. I hit up our local thrift store and got some good steals there. I need a few other items that I couldn't find so I'll be going to a store for those and look at their clearance racks.0
-
I'd say at least every two sizes. You can always set a spending limit and go somewhere cheap. I bought a bunch of cute stuff at target the other day for next to nothing. Search the clearance racks, I found some adorable dresses, shirts, and jeans that were between $5-$20.
Bonus points of you're a "weird" size (smaller than a 4 or bigger than a 14). I find cute zeros on sale all the time because nobody buys them.0 -
I try to go every two sizes like some others mentioned. For work pants, my boss told me "you can't wear those anymore, you need to go buy more this weekend." It got pretty bad.
I try to get a few things here and there, on sale. I have been getting some basic tshirts at oldnavy.com for $5-$6. I can dress them up for work or wear them casual on the weekend. The fit now, but if I shrink out of them they can be gym shirts or sleep shirts.0 -
I bought a few new things after I lost about 30 lbs. I just got two pairs of shorts, a pair of jeans and a few shirts. I figure this would be enough to help me get by for the next 10 or 15 lbs lost.0
-
I got loads of stuff from ebay for next to nothing, they only new stuff i got was undies, gym clothes and some cheapy jammies i would imagine i'll be in this size for quite awhile now as i only have 12lb to loss and i'm focusing on toning instead of weight loss now.0

I've been buying new clothes whenever I have a few extra dollars. A $10 t-shirt from Target every couple of weeks won't break the bank and helps me feel good about myself and my progress! Underwear is a necessity, too- when my current stuff is falling off of my butt, I need new ones, and they're not expensive so I pick up some in the next size down so I'm not uncomfortable all day.
Pants and skirts are my sore point- they're too expensive to just buy whenever I feel like it, but because I'm apple-shaped, once they're too big they look HORRIBLE and can fall right off of me, but belts are super uncomfortable because they have to cinch in my belly to hold the pants up. So far, I've been able to borrow some skirts for work from a friend and live with one pair of jeans and a few pairs of exercise pants/capris, but I'm quickly shrinking out of those skirts and I don't have a source for more in my current size. I HATE shopping for clothes at goodwill/other thrift stores- the clothes always smell weird to me and it makes me feel dirty- but I might have to.0 -
I still have a lot of skinny clothes that I knew I'd wear someday again.1

I go when there 3$ a bag or if I do by new I get them cheep or a size or 2 smaller then I wear.0

2nd hand also some of the other members would probably more than happy to donate their too bigs. Theres an exchange site on MFP groups but its not very active.0

If things are literally falling off me, or if they look sloppy, especially for work clothes.
I need new work clothes so bad0 -
Right now about 90% of my clothes have come from thrift stores (not including my unmentionables of course). When I shrink out of one size, I donate those clothes and buy clothes in a smaller size, its the circle of life. My goal is to be either at goal weight or close enough by the end of August when a new outlet mall opens in my area so I can go on a massive shopping spree.0

invest in a belt with holes going all the way around it (that's what I did) and wait I went from a 16/18 to a 3/5....I did go to Goodwin a few times. I just didn't want to buy anything new because I wasn't planning in staying that size.0

They always recommend to buy new clothes as you go. Buy dresses that can be belted, so when you lose a little more, they will still look good. Wearing dowdy clothes doesn't do anything for the self esteem. Go buy some new clothes. It will make you super happy that you are fitting into a smaller size. I buy a new dress every Friday. When I started I was at a size 16 dress (18 pants). Now I'm in a 12 dress, 14/15 pants. My goal is a size 9/10 dress. (I still have 15-20 pounds to go). I will go on a shopping spree once I hit it, but for now I am slowly updating my wardrobe. Take $20 a week and go buy yourself something new. I spend a bit more than that, but I don't have any kids, so all my money goes to me (or the bank).0

with work clothes I need them to fit and look right, I just can't have them look like crap when I interview others for a living. So I buy when I need it. Also I try to buy dresses/skirts...they seem to last alot longer because you can use belts to pull it in to make it slimmer and such.
Other clothes like jeans I wear to they fall off...then get clothes from my mom/friends or such and buy things on sale or thrift.0 -
My jeans were literally falling off me, and my belt I couldn't even get on before was on the fourth notch in! I found 2 pairs of jeans for $1 each at a garage sale the other day, in a size smaller than I am now (motivation!). For summer clothes I got dresses at old navy, most were $8 on sale. For upcoming vacation, I did get a 2 piece swimsuit at Marshall's with a *tiny* bit of muffin top showing but should easily be down to fitting properly within the next month. Once I reach my goal weight I will get a whole new wardrobe (and a tattoo!) as a reward0

I just started hitting the clearance racks at my favorites stores. Some of my pants were falling off me. I bought some dresses too that will still look okay when I am a size or two smaller. I don't plan on replacing my more expensive suits/work dresses until I'm at goal.0

I have a trip planned to Value Village in another week or two with a friend. In the meantime a newly purchased belt is helping to keep the dress pants/skirts up.0

Hmmm..... I am a 10/12. Butt is usually 12, sometimes 14, hips are a size 12 sometimes 10, waist is closer to an 8... Jeans end up being tight on the butt with about 4-6 extra inches of material at the waist/hips.
Buying pants is a B!TCH. I kinda hate it.
My upper body is about an 8/10 depending on the brand.
So I don't wear a weird size, I just have a weird body that's 4 different sizes....
This is why I hate shopping.0 -
At 20 pounds down I took my clothes to a tailor. Not all of them, but my favorite jeans, my dress slacks for work, a few shirts/skirts/etc.
Tailors are your friend, and I got about 10 things tailored for only 50.00 dollars. Its a lot cheaper than buying new clothes.
I also sometimes buy "lots" of clothing on ebay, and I shop at the garage sales in SUPER nice neighborhoods.0 -
What a wonderful dilemma! There have been too many times to count that I have shopped to buy bigger clothes. It is wonderful to shop because you've lost weight! When I shop for smaller clothes, I shops the consignment shops and thrift stores, but I also buy some new things too, because I consider it an incentive/reward! By the way...CONGRATULATIONS!0

If you can afford to buy clothes twice whether regular priced, clearance, goodwill, or the season's latest, I'd buy a set now just so you can throw away the big ones (or donate them) and solidify this current size as the real you. And no going back. For sure. Then you can look great and indulge in all the compliments which might motivate you more as you continue onto your goals. I notice it's hard for people to see your weight loss when you're wearing baggy clothes or silhouettes bought when you were bigger that were meant to cover problem areas. I notice this because this is my current MO since I don't want people to notice on, comment about, or start conversations up about my weight or goals or efforts. So it's from experience but on the other angle of someone trying to hide it still. If you're clothes are that baggy though, the compliments you get may make you feel wonderful. Plus you will look more presentable for work or whatever you do with your days.
There are even styles you could choose that will look great now and be forgiving as you slim down and won't look so off so soon.
Example: Dolman sleeve tops, stretch leggings, like the ones from Hue, Summery dresses in colors that can transition to seasons and be worn with tights and boots later, sandals now. Just nothing with sleeves that are too structured or tailored. Something like this, you can see how as someone slimmed down it would still look nice. There are no sleeve seams right at the shoulder to start falling off when slimmer/smaller.
