Get Off The Treadmill .... What do you say

I found an article online which kinda confused me as my understanding so far was cardiovascular exercises help you in weight loss alot more then exercises done to build muscles .... please comment

Get off the treadmill
If a 200 pound person jogs for 5 miles and it takes them 2 hours to do so, they will burn about 480 calories. If you weigh 250 pounds and jog for 2 hours and end up jogging a total of 5 miles, you burn about 550 calories. If you finish this run in one hour, add 100 calories.

So let’s say you weigh 250 pounds, and can jog 5 miles in about an hour. You just burned 600 calories. Great! Right?

If that same 250 pound person were to do squats for two minutes straight (which is hard to do), you would burn about 350 calories. So in 4 minutes, you could burn almost 700 calories. Even if you don’t have any weight on your shoulders. Now, that is great!

Exercising large muscle groups (like legs), burns a ton more calories than jogging, running, or biking. That is a far more efficient use of time and energy.

If doing two minutes of squats is too easy, and you can go for longer than 2 minutes, you need to put some weight on (or carry some dumbbells). Put on enough weight on so that you can no longer go past two minutes, and at two minutes you are at complete failure and your legs feel like jello and are in pain. That’s how you know it worked.

Another way to burn a lot of calories quickly and efficiently is to sprint. Pick a distance, like forty yards. And run your fastest for that forty yards. Wait a few minutes. Do it again. And again. You will burn a ton of calories and overwork your leg muscles. This will cause them to adjust and grow in response to this stimulus and will raise your overall metabolism in the future. So, in effect, you can keep losing weight in the future by doing these sprints.

So if you are using a treadmill because you think it will burn calories, please don’t. If you are doing it for cardiovascular health, keep it up. I highly recommend 40 minutes of daily cardiovascular exercise. But obviously, not many of us can do that.

I don't believe anyone could burn 700 calories in 4 minutes, I think there is a bunch of misinformation in those few paragraphs.

Well that's an interesting perspective. I believe the assumption that someone is burning 350 calories doing squats for 2 minutes is just a tad on the generous side (by about 340 calories or so). The article also concludes that it's difficult for many of us to get 40 min of cardiovascular exercise a day. Really? Who is this "us"?

Cardio is good for your heart and burns calories. Strength training is good for your muscles and helps retain LBM while losing weight. So do both and forget the article.

Where did you get this article?

5 miles in 2 hours is a casual walk, not a jog. At a 12minute mile it would take an hour to do 5 miles. And a 200-250 pound person will burn ~150 calories/mile while running/jogging. So that person will burn 750 calories in an hour.

Not sure what the calorie burn is for squats, but what you listed is incredibly high.

There are different benefits for weight/strength training vs cardio. If fitness is the goal a person should incorporate both.

Thank you all for the responses .... actually i was jst concerned about the idea of strength training being better for weight loss as it just shocked me and forced me to think that watever i know so far is wrong .... thanks for saving me :D

I do not get on the treadmill for weight loss, I do it purely to get endorphin wasted. As a matter of fact, I am endorphin wasted at this very moment. :D
  • Resistance training will give you better results than pure cardio training for FAT loss. Which is not necessarily the same thing as weight loss.

And I agree with the other posters about the 350 calories for 2 minutes of squats. That just *might* be a bit of an overestimation.

If a 200 pound person jogs for 5 miles and it takes them 2 hours to do so, they will burn about 480 calories.

If a 200 pound person jogs for 2 hours they can cover about 13 miles and will burn about 2100 - 2200 calories.

For the average person trying to educate themselves this post is terrible.

Weight training and cardio are required to lose weight/body sculpt in a responsible manner.

You can find people that swear by all cardio or only weights but they are the minority.

    1) Counting your calories alone WILL result in weight loss.
    2) Adding in weigh lifting will help focus your weight loss into fat loss.
    3) Cardio exercise is important to improve your cardiovascular system - endurance, oxygen usage and cleaning the body of toxins.
    4) Eating a macro balanced diet helps EVERYTHING work better - remember, garbage in/garbage out.
    5) Remain properly hydrated at all times!
    6) Learn to embrace good habits and to forgive yourself small mistakes.

The only way you're going to get rid of 700 calories in 4 minutes is by cutting it off with a knife.

Lifting weights is good. But these kind of articles make weightlifters look stupid.

 No. People can go ahead and eat back their 7 million calories they burned in 10 minutes and wonder why the scale doesn't move.

But great to know when I do the 100 squats my trainer assigned for tonight I can pretty much eat an entire pizza after, :noway:

No. No one is burning 350 calories in two minutes except maybe an elephant at a dead sprint, chasing lions.

  • the reason why weight training can burn more calories is because when you are actually done with the weight exercise your body continues to burn calories at a rapid rate slowly decreasing as the time after exercise gets longer. when you do cardio you burn calories at a higher rate during the exercise but one you are done you go back to a normal calorie rate... weight training burns more calories over time. but there is no way to burn 700 calories in 4 minutes, if there was the world would not be over weight!

Indeed. Even if you count after burn, it’s still a bit much.

I do think squatting, particularly with weights, and HIIT training are awesome for you, for composition and for fat loss. But they aren’t the only things. I read this article today and it was pretty interesting:

Yeah...you would have to walk REALLY slow to walk 5 miles in an hour, let alone job. I run very slowly and I did two miles, including a really big hill, in 30m’s.

Oh and almost forgot, for the record, counting calories does not result in weight loss. Eating in deficit will...You can count and be over everyday...

While I highly disagree with the statements in your posted article, I DO think weights is an essential part of buring calories and shaping your body. FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE, I burn less calories doing one hour of weights than I do an hour of jogging, BUT building muscle means you have a longer calorie burn throughout the day and ups your metabolism over time, much more than an hour of jogging.

I don't think one should do only cardio to lose weight and get fit. But, just my opinion.

You have your figures all messed up. It is completely and utterly impossible to burn 700 calories in 4 minutes - completely impossible!

Treadmills do burn calories, quite simply, because the person is being active whilst on it - it is impossible not to burn calories if you move.

Were you one of the rooks moving up and down the board chasing the queen?

Fact from MiCoach... On Sunday I jogged 13.14 miles in 2:05:13 and burned 2005 calories. I weigh 197. I can't believe I could have burned the same number of calories squating for 6 minutes. It sure would be nice to have that 1:59 back in my life. And think of the wear and tear i could save on my shoes...probably would only need a new pair every couple of years.
