Seep Deprived

I am going through the wonderful mid life, (This knocks out a whole bunch of people) and am having a horrible time sleeping. Ex: Go to be at 10, go to sleep around 11:00 and wake up about 12, after about 20 minutes back to sleep and wake up about 2, stay awake until 4, doze for about 30, wake up and finally drift off to sleep when it is time to get up. Sleep deprivation is horrible on your weight. We all need 6 -8 hours of deep sleep REM for all sorts of study, getting rid of inflammation, weight loss, etc. So, I like natural first and bought Melatonin, which worked great 1st night and so so on the 2nd. Does anyone have any natural remedies, food, etc. that would help? Thanks...

It's not a food, but I bought a sleep mask and started reading a little before bed. It helped somewhat, but I'm still open to any other suggestions for getting to sleep and STAYING asleep!!

My MIL works for a chiropractor and massage place and they sell these pills called Formula 303s. They are suppose to be natural, knocked me out cold. Of course I don't normally have a hard time sleeping! I hope you get some good sleep soon!

I have this problem as well. I have started taking a hot bath before bedtime. The hot water signals my body that it is time to relax. I usually still wake up all times during the night but at least the quality of sleep time is getting a little better.
  • I have an App on my iTouch that plays meditation melodies (my iTouch also doubles as my morning alarm so it's always near my bed). I turn that on for 30min and I'm usually asleep after 15. A "soothing melody maker" might be something to look into.

If I have a couple of bad nights in a row, I take a valerian root supplement.

Edit: My mother found relief in taking a baby's dose of Benadryl before bed. But that would definitely be something to talk to your doctor about.

Some basic habit changes... like... regular bedtime....and switching off at least 30 minutes before your bedtime can help.... 30 mins before you want to sleep.... turn off telly and play soft music. light a candle... or have a hot bath.... read as someone suggested... or do a meditation. These are all signals that will tell your body you are getting ready to sleep. So... that when you get to your bed... you are relatively relaxed... and sleep a little easier and deeper.
SOmetimes emotions can play on us in our sleep. Anger, sadness and frustration can be the worst...... Try spending a little time in the evening to expend these.... Sometimes Journaling can help..... The mere writing down of a frustration can help to alleviate it.
There has been research (somewhere) that a warm glass of milk actually does help you sleep... the heating of the milk changes a component of the milk that can help relax you. Now this may sound a little nuts... but an evening snack of turkey can help... Turkey contains I believe it is Tryptophan that makes you sleepy.
Other things you can purchase. Valerian root... a natural derivitive of valium.... and melanin or melatonine... brain is scrambling sorry.
    Hope that helps....
  • Thank you all so much, I will try the root, and the relaxing and the emotions... I do like to journal but haven't done it in awhile. :)

The Formula 303's (that I suggested earlier) main ingredient is the valerian root.

I really like to use Melatonin. WHen i get stressed out i can't sleep. Chamomile tea helps ALOT. When things get really bad though,
I take 1 melatonin and sometimes 1 tylenol PM and that usually does the trick.
