Calling all distance runners! Question Please!

Hey all! I was looking for some advice after a run I just did. I've been 'a runner' for about 2 years now and just ran my longest race of 11 miles yesterday. Half of the trail was uphill in the woods. I'm looking for new running shoes but I wore my Nike Free Trainers on this run. I did great and felt great but after the run I can't even walk because of my ankles and knees. Basically, my right foot on the right side has horrible pain when I try to walk, like shooting, cramping pain. Limping from that makes my left knee hurt. I feel like my knees might be sore just cuz it was a long run, but my foot concerns me. My knees hurt on the outside bottom bone that sticks out when you bend them. When I press that bone it hurts. Anyone else ever has similar issues or have suggestions? I used aspercream to help a little and wore an ankle brace; but even with the ankle brace on I can't walk. I'm not a baby with pain or anything either, but I literally couldn't even go to the store of I needed something because of the pain when walkig. I appreciate any insight or suggestions!

Did you do the Marine Corp 17.75k? I did that too. Some parts of that course were rough! Not sure if I have any good advice for you other than to ice and rest. If it's still too painful to walk after a day or two, maybe you should see a Dr. I've been nursing an ankle injury for a few months now and the ice, rest, and stretching (hot yoga) have really helped a lot.
  • I have always been an advocate of Adidas. Currently I am wearing thr Adidas Energy Boosts. Great cushioning and support. I ran 10 miles yesterday mostly uphill and it was the first time my ankles were sore. I believe it was all the inclines. You can try wrapping your ankles for extra support. Or you might want to look into a trail shoe. Also, your knees should NEVER hurt so you definitely need more cushioning. Brooks has amazing shoes. The Ghost is a popular pick for long distance and they have a few others. Nike sucks for long runs. They burn out quickly as you experienced on hard runs. Hope this helps a bit!

    Hello Madison,

Im having a hard time to add my energy boost to my trainings, one day is knee pain, another is calf, or ankles, and like you i have always been an advocate of Adidas, i use before the Adizero Feather 2, way less cushioned than the Boost,..

Did you feel the same when you start using the Energy Boost? What was your experience?

How much longer was the race than your longest training run?
Do you do your training runs on similar terrain to what the race was run on?

The pain on the lower outside of the knee sounds like IT Band Syndrome. There is lots of information on this board and the Internet in general about it. I advocate hip and core strengthening to combat it. There are other things to do as well. Google should be able to help you.

The foot pains just sounds like over use from that length of run, on that terrain in those shoes. Taking some time off should fix that. Maybe a couple days to a week.
