Insanity Raging Hunger

Hey,
I'm on my third week on Insanity.
Today and yesterday my apatite has been raging. Even though my performace today wasn't as great (i.e. I'm taking more breaks, but I am keeping my form for longer and workingout at a faster pace before needing a break). I just feel hungry and my body is demanding food every though I have indulged more than enough today. I've already had 3 meals, one of them being pretty heavy (and two of them with more carbs that I would like to have eaten) and It's only a couple hours past lunch time!

Are you following Insanity's eating plan?
  • Yes and No.
I live at home so I don't have much say over what I eat, so I do have "5 meals" a day, but it's usually 4 small ones and a bigger one in the evening.
Also I use my own recipies rather than the ones provided
e.g. branflakes, slimfast instead of the shakes recommended, instead of wheat bread I use oat bread if I am having bread etc. etc.
  • Sorry for the double post.
I've workout how many calories I can take in and I'm keeping to that (1,800) sometimes 100 over sometimes 100 under

I am planning on re-doing insanity once I return to colledge and then I can follow the recipies given as I'll be doing my own cooking and spending lol

Eat more! insanity burns more than most people think. Slim fast is garbage! it has hydroginated oil as one of the first ingredients.

Other people will probably tell you to open your diary so they can see what you've been eating, but here's what I've got so far:
Honestly I'd ditch the slimfast entirely and substitute whole foods in its place. How much protein and fat are you getting each day? Those will help your satiety. Also, if you're doing a very intense workout program like Insanity, your TDEE-20% may be even higher than 1800, so you may be able to eat a bit more.

Also, I know Insanity recommends eating smaller meals a bunch of times a day, but that hasn't been proven to aid weight loss any more than eating the same number of calories spread over fewer meals. I'm one of those people that like 3 bigger meals and small snacks, rather than trying to make 4 or 5 equal meals and it hasn't impeded my progress. Perhaps eating more at one time will help keep your hunger at bay.
  • Is the slimfast cramming me with carbs?

I want to eat more, but my house is so full of carbs that I try not to overdo it, but I'm not wholely sure how to replace those carbs, because they are staples.
Then I was told to try not eat fruit as that is just as bad as the carbs as it is sugar?
TBH, I'm a bit rubbish with the carbs and protein working out. I kind of gave up when I was told not to eat fruit

Also, someone told me, as I am in the first month 1800calories is waaaay too much unless I am burning 800calories

My husband has done Insanity, and had to REALLY boost his protein. I think they encourage protein shakes after workouts - at least P90X did.

My suggestion would be to dramatically increase your protein intake - it takes longer for the body to "burn it off" (about 7-8 hours) than it does for carbs (about 2-3).

Who is telling you these things? Very strange advice.

    1. Find out what your TDEE is (Total Daily Energy Expenditure). You can find out using this site: http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/

    2. Eat the number of calories you need to to reach your TDEE - 20% (or it can be minues 10%, 30%... whatever works for your goals). For example if my TDEE is 2425 calories, -20% of that would be 1940 calories. I would need to eat 1940 a day.

    3. When you do that TDEE method, you do not eat back the exercise calories you've burned (if you dont have a heart rate monitor to track how many calories you burn you may want to invest in one).

    3. Eat however many meals you want, whenever you want. The rule that you have to eat a specific amount of meals is garbage.

    4. Slimfast is probably not filling you up like the shake in the insanity fitness plan would (proably has way more protein then slimfast). which is why you may be more hungry.

    5. You can eat fruit. Whoever told you you cant is talking psuedoscience. Track you macros: protein, fat, carbs. Sugar and sodium is important and you should watch them as well but the macros are what will really help you get to where you want to be. As long as you follow the rule "everything in moderation" you will be fine.

    6. Keep tracking your calories in your diary.
  • I always thought carbs took longer to burn off. Thanks for that :D

Also dp1228, would u be able to recomend a good HR monitor?

Slimfast's ratio of protein to carbs isn't terrific, plus in general your body breaks down and digests liquids much faster than solids, leaving you hungrier much sooner.

1-3 servings of fruit a day is fine. Sure it's carbs and sugar, but they're not the enemy.

The person who told you you need to burn 800 calories if eating 1800 is waaay off, lol.

Some idea of foods add to your diet to curb hunger: eggs eggs and more eggs, tuna, nuts and nut butters, avocado, smoked salmon, non-flavored greek yogurts, string cheese, cottage cheese, lentils, quinoa, and as many vegetables as you can eat.

i like using polar heat rate monitors. i use the ft7. the shelf life is a couple of years if you take care of it properly.
  • As long as it can last upto each birthday I should be able to survive. hehe

I just started insanity.. Holy crap does that work out KICK BUTT!!! I have a protein shake for breakfast almost everyday.. AND i do a protein shot (protein to go is what I use) after my workout, Plus I *try* my best to eat protein with every meal. I preboil eggs and take those suckers everywhere. I also mix them with avocado or spicy mustard and spinach, mushroom, garlic, red onion.. whatever veggie is in my fridge. Also get some good greek yogurt. Plain fat free chobani is my favorite. Is't high in protein and I mix my own flavoring in so I always like it. (chocolate protein powder mixed with this makes it taste like pudding!!)

Can you sit down with your family and tell them what your goals are and ask them to help you with the food part of it? Can you volunteer to cook dinner 1 or 2 days a week? Pasta is not the enemy. Eating a triple portion of it is. I make mine italian. That means no red sauce. I mix grape tomatoes, peppers, red onion, (and whatever other veggie strikes my fancy) olive oil with the pasta and put either chicken breast or fish on top.

Get RID of the slimfast and other stuff along those lines. You can work aroudn whatever is in your kitchen. Can you make a salad and add eggs, cheese and nuts to it? Go to the grocery store with your family and ask for chicken breast and add that to your salad? Most people haev tuna as a staple.. that's super high in protein and pretty versitile. There's tons of easy, healthy, low cal high protein recipes out there. You just have to look and be willing to cook and try something new.

Oats are easy and versatile. You can also make your own protein bars. I've got a ton of recipes on my blog on here. Most are easy quick and healthy. (a few are not! LOL)
