I finish phase 1 of insanity tomorrow and wondered if the recovery week is important as I'm tempted to do pure cardio and cardio abs all week instead

Do the recovery week ... if you feel like you have the energy to do more, go for a walk or a light run, but give your self time to recover. You are about to get pounded.0

I'm a postie so I am walking all day anyway. At least 12 miles a day0

Recovery week is an awesome break before the intensity of month 2. Like the previous poster said, you're gonna get pounded. It gets seriously harder.0

Yes, it is important. If you do not let your body recover you are risking to not get as good results in long run, or even over train. More is not better, you have to train smart. Recovery week is not simply to pity you "oh, hes tired, lets give him a brake", no. It's all planned and balanced. If you do not recover you will not as good results as if you would.0

Personally, I didn't do recovery week. I took about 3 days off and did my own thing (hiked, lifted, etc) and then I jumped right into month 2. I'm not missing that recovery week at all!0

if you're going to get the plan you might as well follow the plan0
