HI everyone, I'm Kiki. I'm about to be 21, returning to school, and trying NOT to eat my depression but failing miserably. I have gained 60lbs since high school (3yrs) and it just really gets me down even more than the depression already has me. Any support and encouragement is always appreciated here :).

A little about myself: I am pursuing a degree in vocal performance with an emphasis in opera, own a small baking business (cupcakes and cookies) out of my licensed home kitchen, and was an athlete my entire life until college. It took me three years to get going on this college thing, because every time i try it, depression destroys everything I try to do. I think I am finally in a stable enough place to be on top this time, made it through one semester so far and almost done with summer session. As far as sports go, I can't really do anything on land. I was raised a fish, so water sports are my thing. I just joined the college's water polo team and start practice tomorrow (hope i dont die).

Your turn!

If depression is causing that signifciant an impact, you might want to try talking to a therapist. Colleges often have free or very cheap health care, including mental health, and finding someone who can actually help you through your depression is extremely beneficial. It was for me. It's going to be difficult to keep a lifestyle change on track until you can get your emotions sorted out.

    Hey Kiki, welcome to MFP!

When I finished high school I put on a bit of weight too, but for slightly different reasons.
I'd unknowingly been doing a heap of cardio from walking to school and back every day, so I could eat whatever I wanted and I'd still look like a rake!

When I went into the workforce, I got a little depressed at the whole "I have to do this for the next 40 years" stuff, and I ate my feelings (which usually consisted of sugary baked goods in the mornings!) - add that to the sudden drop in regular exercise, and here I am!

I've read that sugar (particularly processed stuff), can both make existing depression much worse, and even start it off if you've never had it, due to the rollercoaster ride in blood sugar your body experiences (amongst other things) - so if you're interested in making some deeper decisions, try cutting out processed sugar for a few months and see if this helps ease your depression a bit?

Otherwise, good idea on starting fitness in areas you're keen on, it should help you stay motivated!

    Good luck :)

I havent been tested, but im fairly sure im actually pre-diabetic. so cutting back on sugar is a really good idea for me. It's just a tough one!!
