Need more calories....Any suggestions...

Hey all,
I have been with MFP for over 10 days, and have been told that my caloric intake is too low... The thing is ...is that I am a T1 diabetic ...and in addition to eating clean all of the time, I also watch, protein, sodium, potassium etc....due to stage 2 (possibly 3) kidney issues....(because of having Diabetes for 23 years)... My diabetes is very very well controlled.....I fear that I am in that "starvation mode"..hence I am not able to get to my goal weight quicker.
Can anyone suggest what I can add (and it can't be additional protein or anything with alot of potassium/sodium)....to make up my 1200 calories... you think I should add another piece of fruit (perhaps an apple) or fewer more serviings of vegetables at dinner?
I find difficult to make that 1200 mark, ...would it be ok if I go to like 1000?
Please help, any suggestions would be appreciated....as it's such a shame that eating clean all the time for me ....means no incentive with weight loss and it's driving me bananas!!!! speaking of which, can't eat those either, a kidney no-no....too much potassium. Please feel free to look over my food diary and make suggestions.....
Thank you all!!
Raj

With your health issues, the only people you should be asking these questions of are your doctor and dietitian. Good luck to you.0

How about the use of oils (EVOO, coconut) or other fats such as cheese, avocado or nuts. Also, feel free to drink calories. Additionally, with less than 15 lbs to lose, make sure your account is set to 1/2 lb per week. Any more and it's too aggressive.0

Can you safely increase fat (more salad dressing, tuna in oil, etc)? Some real old fashioned oatmeal (with good fiber?). Some real, whole grain bread. I'm throwing a few ideas out, but please check with your doctor to see if they are OK. I like the idea of natural, but this might be a case where an "artificial" nutritional supplement could be in order. Are you dieting with doctor's blessings?0

Thanks everyone. I have an appointment with my dietitian in about 2 weeks....just was getting impatient...LOL...
As for nuts, dairy and cheeses (they are forbidden) due to the renal diet......
Salad dressings unfortunately have a lof sodium, unless of course there are great recipes out there to make your own....
I think it's a good idea to change my weight loss to 1/2 lb a week?...i didnt realize I could do that....Thank you again for the great advice,

Changing your loss goal to 1/2 lb a week will give you more calories to eat, not less. Definitely talk to your doctor and dietician. For home made dressings check out Pinterest.0 -
Sorry, also in answer to your question, it's not really a diet for me...it's a lifestyle, I have been eating like this for over 7 years now.....I have seen alot of weight loss but just recently (2 years ago)...I was diagnosed with low thyroid and also mild kidney issues from having diabetes for 20 plus years....so i am not battling two things....diabetes and a renal food restriction....
For the most part, I am ok with all this and I dont find I am ever hungry, but every time I complete my food diary, MFP tells me that it's too little.....the other thing is that I burn 1200 to 1500 calories in my exercising which I love to do....and it's like, ...my poor body....but I dont feel ill or hungry....?? All questions for my Endo /Kidney doctor and dietitian, I appreciate you all listening to me gripe about all this.
Thank you so much.

is this a repeat???
You can't be in starvation mode if you are consuming 1000 calories a day. Starvation mode occurs when you eat nothing for 72 hours or longer.
Try greek yogurt about 120 cals in an 6 ounce container...or eggs, chicken, an ocassional steak...
You could make a protein shake three scoops will get you to about 250 calories...but I always find it better to eat my calories/protein than drink it...
IMO it should not be that tough to get over 1200 calories...I usually have about 1000 for dinner...my diary is open..0 -
No sorry, it's not a repeat. Cant do dairy, nuts, cheeses, etc....due to renal restrictions. I appreciate your advice though, Thanks. It's hard to get 1000 when you have food restrictions and burn more than you eat.0

ok so when you use egg whites- switch to whole real eggs
When you used "light crackers" use regular ones
When you steam your veggies try sautéing them in a little butter or oil- little ways to up your calories0 -

She can't eat foods with protien, greek yogurt, eggs, chicken, and steak are full of protien...0 -
You could add in more carbs, potatoes, rice, quinoa, sweet potatoes... that combined with extra fruits n vegies But the carbs would bring your cals up pretty quickly... also try fruit juice, there kind of higher in calories and would make your goal easier to reach Also cereal and sweetened almond milk, it has like no protien in them, and the cereal is easy to build up calories with too0

This. So much.0 -
Raj, are you working out to burn over 1000 a day, and eating about 700 a day? Are you insulin-dependent?
I am hesitant to recommend more carbs, because although you say that your diabetes is very very well controlled, it seems you are eating quite a bit of high-ish glycemic food in what you do eat.
Definitely talk to your doc, but this seems unhealthy to me. My rec would be to add fats (real salad dressing, whole eggs). And to NET 1200 a day minimum.0 -
Thank you for the great tips. Sorry, sometimes I forget that we aren't doctors and stuff, ...and I dont mean to put people on the spot with all these questions....I just like to keep an open mind and because we all have similiar goals....although I am different (with health issues)....I still figured I try asking the question and see what others think, maybe they were in a similiar situation....etc...I will check with the doctors and dietitians, but let me just say, there comes a point after having a chronic illness...that doctors/dietitians, don't really know what to say either, it's textbook and i like to research and get feedback from real people.. Thanks for keeping it real, everyone, i appreciate it.

Some days you are burning around 2000 calories on exercise and then eating only 725 total. That's kinda crazy. Either eat more of what you are already eating, because its part of our doctor prescribed "diet" or cut out some of the exercise. There is no reason to workout over 2 hours a day. 30min to an hour is fine, but please try to eat over 1000 calories. Avocados have a lot of calories, as do oils.0

Have you considered burning less then at least until you've gotten a plan in place with your dietician? I know you said you enjoy the workouts, but if you're burning more than you're taking in it can't be good for your body.0 -
You might ask your doc about any of the nutritional drinks for your situation some are Nepro®, Suplena®, NovaSource Renal®, Nutren Renal® and ReGen®0

That's a good point.....overtraining isn't good either....but because I don't feel tired or runned down ...I just keep going I guess. I will try cutting back on the exercise and then at least my calories will be in check, thank you so much,....great advice!0

Without being a medical professional, my best suggestion is to say oil and fats. Really though, cooking everything with plenty of oil is about as good as I got. Fat calories are dense. Alternately, pure sugars perhaps? Honestly, like most people here my best advice is talk to your dietician. Renal failure is nothing to mess around with as I'm sure you're well aware.0
