With my guilty pleasure being that I read WAY TOO MUCH of yahoo's news steam I came across this article. Way to go Portland, on being #6!
Anyone else on the ranking?
UPDATE:
Yes, everyone I know it's total garbage as is 98% of yahoo news. Mostly I just thought it was fun and funny!

San Antonio invalidates this list...0

" Its calculations are based on user activity such as fitness-related status updates, gym check-ins, use of fitness apps, and fitness-related life events added to a person's timeline "
So I guess if you check in to a gym on facebook your a fit city.. this whole article is garbage.. 3 Texas cities and 1 New Mexico city.. ya ok.. I believe that.0 -
judging by the people i see regularly update fb about going to the gym, i would say this list is completely irrelevant0
-
Yeah, well, I live in one of the U.S.'s fattest cities! So there!!!! LOL0
-
I lived in Virginia Beach for 2 months years ago and yes I can agree that I was a lot fitter for it then. Lots of good bike trails amongst many other things I found.0

Boston always makes these lists so yep. There used to be a list of America's fattest cities that I always got a kick out of--it would have taglines like- Houston-we have a problem, or Philadelphia-the city of brotherly love handles. I always found it amusing but I dont think they do it anymore. I believe it was Men's Health magazine that came out with the list.0

Interesting. I spent most of my life in Oklahoma City. So, I gained weight because I moved to AZ???0

Usually the list of fattest cities is places you know you can trust the food is good...0

I'm afraid I have to agree with your assessment. The article should be called "10 cities where people just won't shut up on Facebook about how much they are going to the gym".
If you look at actual fitness *outcomes* such as obesity rates, not how much people talk about it, then Virginia Beach is smack in the middle of this list:
http://www.livescience.com/18886-obese-cities-list-2011.html
(Compare this with Boulder, Colorado, which almost always comes out on top of "fittest" lists--an obesity rate of 12.1%.)0 -
A list of the 'Fittest Cities' from those titans of reputable research, Facebook and Yahoo?

Guess I'm a seahag.0 -
I don't even need to look at it.
Atlanta has the Varsity...we gotta be up there.
For those that don't know the Varsity basically gives you grease with a little food sprinkled on top.0 -
The fact that Colorado Springs made that list above several other cities in Colorado invalidates the article for me.

That's because a lot of Yahoo's "news" comes from bloggers.... or pulled from other sources.
And Shine isn't really a news site per se... it's a women's lifestyles blog space.... that pulls most of the blogs from elsewhere.
Anyway, Austin doesn't surprise me... but San Antonio and OKC do because they are always labled "unfittest or fattest" city by health magazines.0 -

The link that I got from this story above http://www.americanfitnessindex.org/quickview.htm has OKC and SA way down at the bottom. 50 and 48 respectively.0 -
IM STARVING FOR A CHEESEBURGER AND FRIES0

Sorry- I didnt read the article before posting as Boston did not make the list. I thought it was the list from Time that was posted in the thread afterwards.0

Totally not surprised that Austin is #3. With all the runners, cyclists, yogis, and health nuts here, we're DEFINITELY a super fit city!
ETA: San Antonio is definitely a joke though. Have y'all been to San Antonio? It's more like the #1 place for amazing Mexican food. Not fitness. Now I wanna go to Mi Tierra mmmmmm0 -
I don't have to look at the article to know mine isn't there. I'm in NE Tennessee and we likes our BBQ, donuts, bacon, and various fast food establishments.0

ATX up in here!!!0

Word for word!!
I moved TO Austin from SA, and somehow lost 60lbs with the healthier lifestyle and city. You can't turn around without finding a healthnut.
Go Austin!!0
