Crossfit workouts

So I go to crossfit here in Salem,Oregon and was wondering what kind of calories I'm burning. We do every different type of exercises, some are timed and it changes everyday. Well it gets hard to track these types of things since I can't find them on the site. Like squats or GHD machine sit ups, burpess. I want to accurately estimate what I'm burning so I know if I need to eat less or more. I just know that everytime I do crossfit I am sweating buckets. Last night for example was
(warm up) done 2 times
25 feet of down and back knee highs
25 feet of down and back butt kickers
10 squats
10 kip swings
50 single under jump rope
THE WORKOUT OF THE DAY
8 rounds-2 minute each round of
20 second headstand hold
30 second wall sit
6 kettlebell swings(with 35 lbs)
then as many GHD sit ups after all above is completed.
Start over after two minutes.
"second" workout was partner sprints down and back 25 feet then 10 burpees in between 5 rounds.
As you can see its a lot of activity and sometimes I don't know where to begin on how to post this stuff. Most of the time I just list calisthenics for 45 minutes since thats all I can guess for this type of workout.
Thanks for any help on this.

  • your best bet would be to invest in a heartrate monitor that count caleries burned also.

I do Cross Fit too! You're the first person here I've seen that does it too. I burn approx. 550-850 calories in 45 minutes. It depends on our WOD, if it's a heavy day then my numbers are toward the lower end. My trainer emails us our WOD and I just got it...Tabata Impossible. A full class of nothing but Tabata intervals. I will be at the high end of my burn range!

    I LOVE CROSS FIT!!!!!

PS: I wear a HRM during class.
  • Great job doing Crossfit, Thats really tough, but does the job faster than anything ive seen around. I did Crossfit in Lake Oswego for 1 yr and my cardiovascular shape was fantastic, The thing was , was i wasn't eating right, so all that work didn't pay off; when it should of. Its hard to know how to input Crossift exercise into your exercise log, cause it is so intense. I would put down vigorous exercise 20-30 minutes, However long it takes you to complete the WOD. If you do warm up , input that as well. Keep it up. I hope to get back to it soon

I also LOVE CROSSFIT!! My trainer told me it also varies depending on the WOD. We all know some are WAY harder than others...filthy fifty anyone?

I log it as circuit training, if anything it will underestimate it.

thanks everyone for the great ideas. I do love my crossfit but I know my eating was sabotaging it so now that I'm on MFP, I finally see how bad I was eating and putting my workouts to waste. I will definitely be investing in a heart monitor and can't wait to see my results.

It varies person to person because we all burn calories differently, unfortuantely and unfair IMHO..lol
I also do crossfit and burn about 350-500 calories in a 35-45min class

My Box lets us wear a HRM, so I always log my workouts as a new workout then CF WOD: 21-15-9 Thrusters (weight), pull ups TIME:____
My classes are 60 minutes so I use the total calories burned in the 60 minutes I worked.

I'm going to just use "Calisthenics (pushups, sit-ups), vigorous effort" and "Strength training (weight lifting, weight training)" and then apportion the amount of time in the WOD to each one.

You can't really account for the calories burnt after strength training. They are burnt sitting at your desk at work (like I do) while your muscles repair.

What heart rate monitor do you guys use? Most use bluetooth, any problems with range? Where do you keep your phone?

    I CrossFit too :)
I use this site to help estimate calorie burn:

Calories Burned Calculator for Crossfit at FitClick
    www.fitclick.com/calories_burned?srch=Crossfit

And I use myfitnesspal to make sure I'm eating enough.

    Have fun!

PS. I use the figure listed for the average WOD at fitclick, then just adjust for time each day. I haven't even tried to add in the warm up, though it isn't anything to sniff at! I've a feeling the calories are underestimated, but at least I get a ball park idea where I am so I can increase my calories as necessary.

I've considered adding what we do for strength training to the cardiovascular section since noticing when I log in my strength for the day it doesn't change the calorie burn number at all. Kind of frustrating since the strength often is nearly as intense as the WOD so I know I'm burning plenty there too...

But, like I said, I use myfitnesspal mainly to help make sure I'm getting enough to eat. If I don't I'll be sure to notice it in the box come 5:30am sharp!

I would be wary of any number from a HRM. They are designed to estimate calories burned during steady state aerobic exercise. A lot of the elevated HR in Crossfit does not fit this category and will likely give an inflated number.

I log it as circuit training.

Starting Crossfit boot camp Thursday, 1 hr classes, twice a week, 10 weeks. I am wearing Bodymedia Core armband monitor. I'll post results as I go! If I can remember the routine I'll post that too. Remember with age and current weight, eating routines, result will vary.

    CW: 141.7

    53 yrs old
    Eating 1200 calories/day

See you all after Thursday July 11/13

Oh my I'm so addicted to crossfit! I have been logging it as circuit training but I think it under calculated it if you are doing ME or harder longer WODs but I'm glad other girls are into it :)))

Hi SkyBlue... you and I are about the same weight/age/calorie level. I have 20lbs. that I want to lose. I do crossfit and don't quite know what to do with my calories. Do I up them for crossfit days? I don't think I can workout at my optimal level at 1200 calories. Any advice would be welcome.

I agree regarding logging in as circuit training log and underestimating it as well. Caloric burn of Cross-fit continues long after the workout. Superiority of HIIT workouts over long steady state cardio.
