Skin Removal Surgery

Has anyone had surgery post weight loss? I've been debating the idea for over a year now and can't decide if it's something that I want to do. Its obvious that I "need" to have it but I don't know anyone personally who has been through the procedure. I haven't been to a doctor yet but assume that they would want to do a tummy tuck with possible arm and leg work as well. Any surgery stories would be appreciated.... Are you happy with the results? Costs? Pain? Recovery time? Thanks!

med student who did a rotation with an abdominoplasty specialist.

I think if its something you are considering you should at least go get a consult, its much less invasive then you would believe and the recovery time (while variable) is generally not as bad as most open abdominal surgeries. Some of the results though are very impressive - prolly not a great response but just wanted to give you some encouragement to check it out
  • I need this surgery too and have been to the Dr's about it, I've lost over 56lbs but thr Dr wanted me to lose another 21lbs and then hold that weight constant for over a yr before they will even consider surgery and then the waiting list is very long and I was told it's unlikely that I would ever make it to the top of the list, so dis-heartening when i've tried so hard!
I wish you luck and hope you get done what you need.

Have you tried skin firming exercises to eliminate some of the loose areas? There are some great one, they just aren't commonly done today. They won't fix everything, but they may lessen what you need removed. Send me a message.

I am stretch-marked so bad that I know I'll have extra skin... however, its not as bad as you think. Try getting your bodyfat % to 18-20% AND HOLD IT FOR A YEAR, you be surprised how much skin can shrink, and how much of that skin is really fat

    Edited for typos

Thanks for the replies everyone. I've lost 126 lbs. and held it constant for 2 years now. I'm not sure on my body fat % but I strength train alot along with my cardio and have built substantial muscle underneath my loose skin. I'm thinking that I need to go for a consult just to talk with a doctor and find out where I am exactly and what my options are. I don't have a clue how to pick a doctor though.

if you've got stretch marks, the tissue is torn, and will not go away with any sort of exercise. Surgery is the only option, usually. Some of it will "spring back" with time, but if its been two years, then the skin is there.

i had Weight loss surgery two years ago, and I am on a WLS forum, where many people have had this surgery (mostly in ontario). I could direct you to some resources, if you like (even in the states). PM me, and i'll let you know.
