Are abs REALLY made in the kitchen?

I, like many others, carry most of my extra weight (okay ALL of it) around my tummy. I know you can't spot reduce and I know the best way to get that area looking lean is to cut way back on the processed sugars and not be consuming too much sodium. And I am doing that and of course it is slowly slowly working.
Out of curiosity, will just eating right get me a flat firm-ish stomach or do I need to be doing some exercise as well?
I walk around 4-7km apprx 4 times a week but that's all. Please keep in mind that I can't run, or jump rope, or anything that causes my boobs to bounce (due to breast implant, on doctors orders, please don't try to tell me that my doctor is wrong as you don't know my situation).
Has anyone had success in slimming out their stomach without killing themselves in the gym?

Have you considered adding swimming. Rather than using the gym?0 -
Abs are made in the kitchen in the regard that no matter how much ab work you do you won't see it if you have a layer of fat over top. If you don't do any ab work you'll have a flatish stomach maybe but it you've been overweight you'll probably have a sort of jelly belly going on. Not the firm, sculpted look of someone who works those muscles.0

I have to double sport bra myself, so I hear ya!! walk with 3lb weights swinging your arms high and low for added cardio.
I have had a lot of success after reading the virgin diet by JJ Virgin. for 3 weeks, no gluten, sugar, corn, soy, dairy, eggs and peanuts. Before you start to complain that it leaves nothing to eat, you will be amazed at what you can still eat what new foods taste good. I love the almond milk. I still use it in my coffee and cereal. Brown rice pasta with veggies, red sauce and your choice of protein. I have hamburgers without cheese and don't even miss it. better choices = better results.
Good luck!0 -
Bump! i also have this question0

Thanks for sharing everyone
I guess I won't really know the results until more time has passed. I think I will give it until the start of August to see how my diet effects my appearance and then maybe I will have to add in some core work (?) to get more of a firmness.0 -

I'll be brutally honest here. If you carry most of your weight in your midsection, then it's unlikely that you'll ever see your abs. It's not impossible, but you'll have to get really lean, which will only happen with consistent dieting for a long time.
I get abs fairly easily, but I'll probably never have quad separation since I carry my weight in my legs.0 -
Strong abs come from the gym, but being able to see them comes from the kitchen, or doing extra cardio. There are a lot of people who are thin, but have a weak core. I think its really a combination of all 3.0

It's a combination of gym AND kitchen!0

All hope is lost for me then.0 -
No, abs are made in the gym but revealed in the kitchen.0

Everything is made in the kitchen.
For those chiming in, how much mass or muscle change is going to take place to the abdominal wall while on a caloric and nutritional deficit?
It's not about sugar or processed carbs or sodium. (contrary to doctor oz or some website blabbering about abs... that's minimial. It's about eating to lose fat. This includes proper protein and fat intake which people are afraid of. Then later if you want to shape your abs or do a bunch of ab work then you need to be eating at a surplus. Or just start eating like a bodybuilder and lifting like a powerlifter.0 -
No. Abs are made in the gym, but revealed in the kitchen.
A flat stomach is made in the kitchen, sure.
But if you want ab muscles, it takes the gym to make them.
Then if you want to be able to see your ab muscles, it takes kitchen work to unveil them.0 -
Yep, the REALLY are.
As Lyle McDonald explains to get abs “You need two main exercises:
1. Table push aways: when you start to get full, just push away from the table.
2. Head shakes: when someone offers you food not on your diet, twist your head right and then left and repeat going ‘No thank you.’
Getting a 6 pack is mostly about losing fat.”0 -
You could have killer abs already. They say they are made in the kitchen because without losing all of the covering over them (the fat) you'll never see them. A calorie deficit (less food from the kitchen) and a lower BF% is what will let you see those abs.0

Abs are made in the gym, and revealed in the kitchen.
People often forget abs are directly correlated to bodyfat percentage. For example, under 15% bodyfat is a ballpark range to start seeing a 6pack on a woman. However, under 20% the abs will definitely start to reveal themselves.
Much, much easier to cut 500 calories from the diet than it is to burn it off, making the kitchen more effective in this case. Also, I know plenty of skinny people with abs that never workout.0 -
Ab's are made in the gym. Just you have a layer of fat over them if you don't eat right.0
-
I did. "Abs are made in the kitchen" is absolutely true in my case:)0

Everyone has abs. Abs are made by creating a decent calorie deficit to lower body fat. Food intake vs calories burned is the ticket. So the kitchen...........to a point. One can eat perfect and still not get abs.
