I'm not new to the site, but new to the forums.
Thought I'd check it out to see if there is anything of value going on, and to occasionally help others who would want it.
I'm a full time certified personal trainer and have some schooling in nutrition, and am certified in sports nutrition as well.
I've competed in 2 amateur bodybuilding divisions, Light heavyweight and masters. I plan on trying to compete at least once more and maybe twice.

I love my fitness pal's nutrition logging, but find the exercise section falls short over all.

  • Welcome to forum land. I exercise several times a week, and will be using a garmin and HRM to monitor exercise calories instead of just relying on this site to predict my calorie burn. Im making a few more healthier choices food wise, and im now slowly finding the need to buy new smaller clothes :)

    Where are you based as a personal trainer ?
  • tell me - what's the prob with the exercise feature here - just interested - unlike you i'm not much interested in exercies - my loss - but hopefully i'm going to change that - next week i start seeing a pt for my back which dr says needs surgery and i'm hoping will have a chance to fix it holistically with exercise among other things - what do you think

  • Runningman, I'm in western canada out of a Gold's.

    Cynthia, unfortunately diet and exercise go hand in hand. Combined they have a "whole is greater than the sum of the parts" type thing. If you DO little your body adapts to that and tries to become more efficient at that, slowing down your metabolic rate further and further... hope you know what that means long term.
    The exercise features: Strength training section doesn't account for any cals burned or do anything with the data you put in afaik. It's basically a time consuming workout log. ANyone who's keeping a log should be doing it on the fly as they work out so as not to forget anything and so that they can make observations about their sets, form, feelings or whatever other thoughts that maybe pertinent.
    It really needs to have more structure imo and add in calories. I burn several times more calories from intense weight training than i do from my cardio in a week, and so do many other people.

    Oh , about this part- if you have the option, choose a trainer with some rehab experience. I have worked with many trainers that don't even know anatomy, or biology basics. Be picky. What is wrong with your back?

    Thanx. I will try. But I should state that I do this all day, 6 days a week to get paid, so I make no promises that i will be around a lot in my free time "thinking about work" if you get me?

  • hi - i have a tear at l-5 s-1 that is rather large - they want to fuse those bones
  • Muscle tear? Or herniated disks?

    If it's the fibrous connective tissue [lots in the lower back/pelvis] then strength training will do little.
    If it's a muscular tear, then you may be able to re strengthen the area.
    If it's disks, then you could train to minimize strength imbalances and help correct the cause, but the disks themselves would likely need surgery to give you your mobility back.

    Get a few doctors' opinions, specialists, not general practitioners. Get a few physiotherapist opinions as well.

  • If you are doing things unattended, MAKE FULLY sure that you know the EXACT motions involved. An inch, a couple degrees off , and things become very different. Mirrors and even better, a video cam would be valuable tools for this.
  • discs have an outside and an inside shell - a yr ago it looks like i only had an outside tear that's liveable for most people - but then i fell and nows it seems the inside is broke open or something - not entirely sure i undrstand - i trust my PT he's very good but maybe right about doing it at home - he holds me just so and has me do the exercises pretty pecisicely - maybe he can point out some safe exercises to do at home
  • i see him for the first time on tues next (i had seen him before for hip replacement - i'm only 41 but both hips replaced and most other joints are compromised because i have lupis and it's attacking me
  • OH weird, I have systemic lupus as well ! As does my sister and one of my ex-girlfiends.

    Trust me on the video-ing thing, it is a great tool.

  • I've had my issues... Lately i'm getting muscular and joint inflammation quite badly and it's really messing with my exercise and therefore my head. I've just ordered a huge amount of tumeric which i will encapsulate and take daily. to help reduce the severity of the problem.
    My kidneys went a few years back, but i managed to bounce back and they were @ about 80% function the last time i had tests run.
