Carb Crash?

I've only just joined but I've been reading the forums and I'm hoping someone can help.
I have noticed that when I have cereal for breakfast I am really sleepy around an hour later, sometimes for a couple of hours. Sleepy to the point I have fell asleep at work for a few minutes (more than once!). I literally cannot keep my eyes open.
Can someone explain why this might happen? I've tried changing from muesli etc. to plain porridge etc in case it was somethingto do with sugar but it makes no difference.

All carbs are sugar so it IS likely to do with sugar.
Try having a high protein breakfast instead (eggs and bacon maybe?) and see how you feel.
Some people have adverse reactions to sugar like this.0 -
I found depending on the cereal I have on mornings with low sugar content, I feel better and fuller for longer. For example, Cheerios - I feel hungry mid morning, however if I have shreddies - I don't feel hungry until later (11 - 12 noon).
Maybe someone with more experience can advise on this, but is this based on the sugar content or the GI value?0 -
When you eat simple carbs yor insulin spikes after that you have a crash. That may explain you felling sleepy.
Like suggested try eating proteins for breakfast (like eggs, protein shake, turkey bacon etc..) and a fruit and see how you feel afterward.
I eat a couple of eggs and a slice of turkey ham or bacon and in the mid morning I'll have a fruit.0 -
You may also not be eating enough to last you until lunchtime. You could try pairing your cereal with a protein. I know for me I eat every threeish hours and so when I have my breakfast at 5:00am I'm hungry by 8:00am, and thats when I have a snack. I couldn't imagine trying to make it from 5:00 am to 11:30-12:00 to eat again!
I definitely agree with the sugar thing though, I try and stick with whole grains like steel cut oats or cheerios and a protein... and usually a fruit of some sort.0 -

Try some good ol' eggs and bacon! Doesn't really take too long to make. Even just eggs will give you longer lasting energy then cereal. Another new one I do once in a while is ham steak, warm applesauce or sliced with cinnamon, and slivered or crushed almonds.0
