Can I count the water in my beer?

I mean, it's mostly water, right? So if it's 7% alcohol, that just a little more than 11 oz left. Subtract the barley, malt, and whatever extras might be in there, it's gotta be at least 8 or 9 oz of pure water, right?

I'm logging it, 1 beer = 8oz of water.

Makes as much sense as logging coffee, soda or milkshakes as water!

Man, have i been doing this wrong. I could be drinking beer and logging it as water? FML! That's 12 beers a day on average i haven't been drinking!! That's 12,000 beers i missed out on, since today is consecutive logging day 1000 for me.

Thanks for opening my eyes russ. You sir, are a lifesaver!

    LoL. Thats all!

I would say if you're drinking anything "light, lite, ultra" then yes--add that to your water count!

I'm sure you are being facetious, but you could legitimately count some of it. Alcohol is dehydrating so you’d have to account for that, but you do get hydration from most beer (those with abnormally high alcohol % might be an exception), just not as much as you get from non-alcoholic drinks.

But what about dark beers??

Despite the fact that alcohol has a slight diuretic effect you are still netting positive fluid intake. People fixate on water (which I drink) but your fluids can come from tea, coffee, juice, beer, fruits & vegetables etc etc. The whole 8 glasses a day is a contrived number that's used simply because it's easy to remember.

Meh, I like some light beers, especially on a really hot summer day when the dark stuff is just too heavy. I'm not a beer snob with my beer color or label and I don't care what other snobs think of it. I like what I like and I drink what I like. I don’t like all light beers any more than I like all beer of any type. My taste buds are my only ‘snob meter’.

Only if it's mainstream American beer because as Eric Idle said, American beer is like making love in a canoe. It's &^*(ing close to water. :drinker:

    You beat me to it!!

Oh, for those of you taking this post too seriously... Caffeine in the quantities you get in tea, coffee, and soda and alcohol in the amount you get in beer isn't enough of a diuretic to negate hydration. As long as you're drinking less than 500mg of caffeine (5 cups of coffee) or drinks with less than 10% alcohol, you're hydrating. Drink up!

Since beer is liquid bread, I count my hefeweizen as a meal... the beer is a slice of whole wheat and a glass of water, and the lemon is dessert!

OMG, I thought my husband was the only one that called it liquid bread! But "whole wheat"??? What is the fiber count on that whole wheat beer of yours?

*** According to my nutritionist friend it doesn't count as whole grain beer even if you put Benefiber in it.

It'd be great if you could, but you can't. Alcohol acts to suppress ADH (anti-diuretic hormone) so it makes you pee more. So while yes it technically does hydrate you, it will make pee out at least what you drink, and most likely more.

Think about this throughout human history the only safe way to drink water was through fermentation and distillation. So heck yeah you can count it your great great great great great great great great Grandpa did.
