I love working out at home to be honest. I'm talking weight training equipment above all else BUT share your must haves whether it be DVDs, resistance bands, cardio machines...(I'm looking into buying the Bowflex dumbbells).
Throw it all at me! I'd love ideas.

Hey!! Congrats on your weight loss! I've been utilizing my treadmill and that's it. For strength training, it's been squats, crunches and push-ups! lol I'm kinda a beginner though, so....yeah! I've been wanting to try elipticals and stationary bikes. I LOVE mowing the lawn, esp with the hills that I have - that gives me some cardio and strength training all in one.
Hope all is well!0 -
Depends on what your work out goals are. If I stopped going to the gym, I would definitely want a barbell, bench, and weights... and a full length mirror. Some dumb bells would be nice, maybe a stair master or elliptical... but not must haves. (For me, I'm looking to get more into lifting, rather than strength training).0

my must haves: just a pair of 3 pound weights. doesn't sound like much but there are so much you can do with a pair of weights, that's all I really need. I also have a 6 pound medicine ball that I recently got. I love it, and don't ever want to not have it again.0

Yeah lifting is what I want to get more into. I'm looking into the heavy stuff!!0 -
Look into TRX Suspension training. Weighs 2lbs and offers more exercises to do with body weight resistance than just about any home machine that I've seen.

All you need is some bands, the bowflex dumbells (love them!), a pull up bar, and a yoga mat. You can do everything with those. Push ups for chest. (wide grip, military, one armed, supermans etc.. you dont need weights for chest.) But later on, if you realy really want to. Then you can add a bench with an adjustable back. Other than that is a waste of money and space. IMO0

Zuzka Light - she incorporates very little equipment and a lot of body weight but packs a punch for muscle toning and cardio in one. DVDs or free youtube workouts or now a membership. Of course I love the free videos best. :^)0

I know my gym had it, but never got to use it. I never considered it at home. Thanks! I love using my own body weight.A pull up bar
everything else is a luxury
My bf has one at his place and I am definitely planning on using it whenever I am over!0 -

Why not get your own? It's like $30 on amazon for an Iron Gym Pull Up bar. I have one and I use it often.0 -
If my house burned down and i lost my extensive home gym, the first two things I would buy are:
1. A jump rope
2. a suspension trainer0 -
Power rack
Oly bar
plates
Dumbells are optional but if you get the adjustable kind make sure they can go above 60-60 lbs. Many kinds do not.0 -
BUMP!
I definitely need some ideas. Currently I only have a recumbent stationary bike (got a bad leg) and some fitness dvd's like Jillian Michaels. I want to set up my own little gym area in my basement though, so I'm definitely taking notes! :happy:0 -
My only absolute must have: good shoes.
I enjoy also having a barbell and bench set, some dumbbells, and a smart phone with Runkeeper.
EA Sports Active 2 on the Playstation was a good way to get started, since it was interactive and corrected me on form, and I could customize my own workouts.0 -

Unless it pops up on Woot again, I got mine for 20$ there lol0 -
If you are interested in heavy weight training I would second the power rack, bench, oly bar and plates. I found all of mine really cheap on Craig's list.0

We have a bench, barbell, two adjustable dumbbells and plates that can be interchanged with the barbell and the dumbbells. We started out with a bunch of low weight plates but have been adding on to the collection as necessary. We also have a recumbent bike, a variety of fitness DVDs, and things like jump ropes and kickballs. Now that my knee is mostly better the recumbent has been getting dusty because I prefer to ride my real bike out in the real world, until winter comes around again.
I'd like to do some rearranging to make it easier to see my Youtube videos and my form at the same time, as it is I have my husband or daughter tell me if I'm doing it right. There are some great starting-lifting videos on Youtube. DH has promised to turn the shed into a workout room once we're done remodeling the bathroom; I look forward to some more intense home training soon.0 -
A pull up bar and a Jungle Gym XT (a suspension trainer similar to TRX, but doesn't cost as much).0

I spend most the week at my bfs and with my schedule only a couple of hours a week "at home." I don't consider it my home! It's a very crowded household with my family and still months off from moving out. This is an extremely long story
but I have stuff to use when I'm at my house and would like to start working out when I'm over there so I'm so using the pull up bar that he probably only touches twice a year lol.0 -
How do you guys find the motivation to workout at home?!?! Do people really use DVDs to workout? For me its just to easy to press pause and stop working out.
Need help and advice! Thanks!0 -
Fitball, yoga mat, yoga blocks, yoga strap and dumbbells.0

I do a blend of dumbbell training and bodyweight training (which I'm kind of new to).
I have a pair of 25-lb adjustable dumbbells that I get a lot of use out of, a physioball (used for some types of push ups and core work), a yoga mat, a couple of resistance bands, and fitnessblender.com.
I'm in the market for a medicine ball, a speed rope, and a pull up bar.0 -

I LOVE working out at home. Not that it's always easy to get motivated. Usually, on days that I work, I come home and immediately change into my workout clothes and fire up Fitnessblender.
On the weekends, I get up in the morning and immediately put on my workout clothes and head out the door to run, or head into the living room to work out.
Yes, there are times when I want to just hit PAUSE, or STOP. I just don't. Mind over matter. The way I see it, I started the workout, I might as well finish it.
I like that I don't have to commute to a gym. It's just as easy for me to get sidetracked and end up shopping at Target.
I also like that I get to take a shower in my own bathroom after I work out.0 -
I wish I had incorporated heavy lifting into my routine sooner! Right now I dead lift and squat 130# which is all of the weight I have at home, I have additional weight plates on my birthday wish list! I have a barbell, dumbells, and a weight bench. I also have resistance bands (the good ones that can be used for assisted pulls ups etc) a jump rope, a stability ball and boxing hand wraps and gloves (bag is at the gym though--dreaming of one for home!). I always run outside because to me running on a treadmill is barbaric torture lol. I use my BOB jogging stroller a lot to take the kiddo out!
DVD's do not and would not motivate me, other than for form instruction.0 -

^^yes
Plus if I make a commitment I don't like to break it. For example I planned on doing 30ds and I announced to all my friends here. I decided on doing it on the weekdays and resting on the weekend. I'm accountable and don't want to be a quitter. Sometimes setting up a calendar works. I prefer working out at home. I actually push harder.0 -
We've started putting together a small collection of dumbells as they're needed (right now we have 3's, 5's, 8's and 10's plus a 32lb kettlebell). A jump rope, and a workout mat, and a pullup bar (the ones that fit in doorways). That's all we've needed so far, and we're doing just fine.0

For me, working out at home requires a lot less motivation than going to the gym.
When I wanted to go to the gym, I had to make sure I was somewhat presentable and not too stinky, even though I'd be a sweaty smelly trainwreck by the end, plus spend 20-30 minutes driving each way, so since I was spending almost an hour driving, I didn't want to spend less time than that exercising, so it automatically took two hours out of my day.
If I want to lift weights, all I have to do is go upstairs to where my bench is located. Click on the fan, turn on the tv, warm up and lift. I can scoop the cat boxes, do a little reading, check my email, play Candy Crush or put a load of dishes/laundry in their respective washers between sets. If I want to run, I just need to put on my shoes and go outside. No commute, and no one will care if I look or smell bad before I start. :laugh:0 -
I love working out at home, I have a recumbant exercise bike, a exercise ball, some dumbbells, a kettlebell , resistance bands, a yoga mat, ankle weights and some exercise dvds though I usually use youtube0

Wow! Thank you all for the replies! This is giving me a ton of motivation. I have no chance of getting to the gym with a busy schedule and the family to take care of, but you all have shown me that its certainly possible to keep a good exercise schedule at home.
Also, I just found this really neat website called Wello that lets you workout at home with a live personal trainer over the internet using a webcam. Thought the folks in this thread might be really interested. If I do a workout with Wello, I'll report back about how it went.
Thanks again!0 -
I love weights but.....
