I've been going to the gym for the past week and have just been focusing on the cardio. should I also lift weights that affect my stomach area? im scared if I build muscle over fat it will stay there and the fat would be extremely hard to get rid of.

you make no mention of your diet, yet this is the most important part. Are you eating right?0

The best exercise to get rid of fat is your diet. I do no cardio and just lift and eat right. Melts away like magic.0

Your body takes weight off in the opposite order it puts weight on. (if you put belly weight on first, you will lose it last, FILO). No amount of "targeting" will remove fat from that area faster. Building muscle under fat wouldn't make it any harder to get rid of, either.0

^I second this...First of all muscle builds under fat, not over it, so it would in no way trap the fat underneath it or anything, that's nonsense. Second of all, you cannot spot reduce fat from a single location on your body. All you can do is eat at a deficit and lower your body fat percentage and the fat will eventually come off.0 -
There is no way to truly 'target' fat. Each body burns fat differently I've melted it off of my legs and every where and still have the fluff on my belly. The cleaner my diet is the faster it shrinks up though. Check your in take!!0

This...diet is the most important. You should lift, but you can't spot target/spot reduce a particular area. Also, you're not going to build fat over the muscle and then make it harder to lose muscle. Actually, maintaining LBM (i.e. muscle) is going to keep your metabolism clicking and burn more fat in combination with diet than cardio and diet alone.

Best exercise to get rid of belly fat is to watch what you are eating...seriously. All the sit ups, crunches, planks in the world will not "remove" belly fat.0

There are no exercises that target fat on specific parts of your body. Strength training targets the particular muscles and helps strengthen them, but if you just want to lose straight up fat you need to watch your diet and continue doing cardio to help with overall calorie burn.
That's not to say that you shouldn't do ab targeting exercises- you should! They'll help make your abs look great when the fat is gone. But abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym.0 -
Cooking is what will help with belly fat... It's what you eat0
