AUGH!! I gained weight???

Stepped on the scale (Wii fit board, actually. It's all I have) & it says I gained 5 lbs back in just a week. I deducted weight for my clothes. I had 24 ounces of coffee this morning & a bowl of multi-grain cheerios w/ milk & about a ½ cup of blueberries on it; so not enough where I should think this was 5 lbs worth of weight.
I KNOW I haven't had 17,500 (5 lbs with of) extra calories this week. MFP has me as eating 1210 calories per day & after I add in exercise; I have not been over this goal.
Could this just be water weight? If so, what can I do to flush this out of me? I'm frustrated but I'm NOT quitting. Maybe I need to cut the sodium more??
If this matters: I'm 5' 9" & weigh 228 (before this weight gain). My highest weight was 274; so over two years, it's slowly creeping down. I guess this is why I'm freaking out.
Thanks for any input.

Your weight naturally fluctuates up and down. So perhaps the previous time you weighed yourself it was down three from your average weight, and this time it was up three.

"Could this just be water weight? If so, what can I do to flush this out of me? I'm frustrated but I'm NOT quitting. Maybe I need to cut the sodium more??"

Probably. Well, you could stop drinking water, but considering you need water to live, I think a more practical approach would be not to freak out over your body's natural fluctuations.

Edit: oh, I forgot to mention. Losing forty pounds over two years is awesome! You're doing great.
  • You're probably right. I'm sure you & possibly everyone on here feels the same but I feel I struggle for every single pound lost (I have Lupus so I'm fatigued a lot) Just majorly sucks seeing the scale go backwards. I'm going to keep a closer eye on my sodium.

Yes, it can be water weight. Stress, hormones, time of the month, sodium, exercise, etc. can all cause the body to retain water. The solution is actually to drink more water and wait it out. Additionally, make sure you're weighing yourself under the same conditions every day. Preferably first thing in the morning, before breakfast but after your trip to the bathroom. This is when you'll be at your lightest for the day. Once you add food/water to your stomach the scale will read the weight of that food as well as your weight.

If you're weighing 1/week, you can catch some bad luck with the weight wave. Need to give it more time.

Always weigh before eating in the morning just to take that variable out. Drink plenty of water every day and if sodium seems to cause water retention for you, definitely cut down on your intatke of it. Pay more attention to measurements and body fat. Those are your more consistent indicators of loss, not the scale. I don't know who wrote the "rule" that the scale was our main source, but they were wrong and we need to get away from that belief!

If you've been exercising, you probably gained some muscle which is much more dense than fat. You could use a scale that tracks body fat percentage (not terribly accurate, but it helps), or just pay more attention to your measurements than your weight.
  • Could be water weight - easily lost! or simply weight fluctuation. Don't worry about it :)

If the OP gained 5 pounds of muscle in a week eating 1200 net calories/day then some professional body builders would like to know the secret.

This! Absolutely, take measurements, the scale lies! Also agree that you should weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before eating or drinking anything. My weight easily fluctuates by 5 pounds during the day. To flush water weight, drink water, eat asparagus, lower sodium. Congrats on the fantastic progress so far!

    No.

    OP! You aren't gaining muscle.

Get a legit scale. Get a food scale, measuring cups, and an HRM. Don't trust a wii balance board. In all likelihood, it's a natural fluctuation of water weight.
  • Thanks for the feedback. I'm almost embarrassed to admit how bad I was freaking out.
I'm not sure if it's "that time of the month" or not. I lost a twin pregnancy on June 20th. I was 13w 4d along. I got a depo shot that same day & I bled for close to two weeks (sorry if TMI)

open your diary so we can see what you are eating. You are probably eating junk or not eating enough food.

Edit: your hormones are out of whack from the pregnancy and depo shot. Give it a rest for a while and feed your body.
  • I was thinking water weight (if not legit weight gain).
I know it's not muscle. My workouts are not weight lifting ones. :)

^^ this. No way its muscle. Likely water.

I suggest drinking a couple extra glasses today and tomorrow and then reweighing. Also, I suggest eating more. Check out the group "eat more to weigh less" on here.

It could totally be hormonal fluctuations if you are going through all that. Try not to stress out. Drink lots of water.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost a singleton last year around 18 weeks and was devastated. Rest and relax. Most likely its hormones.

To be honest I completely skimmed the OP and didn't notice the calorie intake being so low.
