Hey there!
My name is Alex, and i'm a former binge eater! I know how it feels to lose all control, the isolation, and the guilt. I decided one day enough was enough, only it took longer to gain back control. I tried diet after diet, but this diet, the Ketogenic diet WORKS. Not only that, you will have improved blood pressure, improved cholesterol levels, and improved blood triglyceride levels with this diet(happened to me, also shed around 3 pounds a week at 2,000 calories a day with little or no exercise)! So, this is how the diet works(no copy/paste here, I have just done my research);
A Ketogenic diet is one that will, by nature cause your body to burn it's own fat as fuel(an added bonus plus all day satiety). This diet works by restricting carbohydrates to around 5% of your daily intake, or roughly 20 grams a day. Your body takes these dietary carbohydrates into glucose(a sugar), which enters the blood stream and the body releases insulin to drop your blood sugar. The glucose is either stored in your liver, muscles, or shoved directly into your fat cells if the latter 2 are full. With this in mind, if you are scarfing down 200+ grams of carbs a day(not including fiber), and you're not losing weight, that's why. Your body will always store excess carbs as fat, if your muscle glucogen and liver stores are full.
So, if you're not getting your energy from carbohydrates(the supposed "best" fuel for the body), where DO you get it from? The answer to that my friends, fat. You see, once your body depletes it's glycogen stores, it can only turn to 2 other places to get energy. It either A.) tears apart the protein in your muscles via gluconegenesis, or B.) goes to your fat stores. You would obviously want "B" to happen, so what you need to do is ramp up your fat intake. Alot. When your body senses it can go to fat for energy, it starts breaking up dietary fat and stored fat into ketones, which are used in place of glycogen to run bodily functions and exercise(in fact, the heart prefers running on ketones than glucose). Ketones also supress appetite, naturally..Incase you're wondering about macros, a keto diet should look like 65/35/5 (Fat/Protein/Carb). Protein is simple on this, just keep it to about 1g per lb of lean body mass, but don't go too far over or your body will break down the protein into glucose.
"But doesn't fat make you fat?"
No. Not at all. Don't be afraid of fat, that's what makes this diet work. Your body will drop some serious pounds on this diet.
"Fine. What foods do I eat?"
Meat(every meal) that has a lotta fat(tastes amazing): Beef(70/30, 80/20, whatever), chicken WITH THE SKIN, any meat not cured in sugar(bacon, ham, salami, pepperoni, etc.), pork, fish. If it swims, flys, crawls, or walks(preferablly on 4 legs), you may eat it.
Fats(every meal): Butter, oils, heavy cream, salad dressings like ranch, blue cheese, and caesar, lard, tallow, etc.
Nuts(make room for them in carbs): Peanuts, walnuts, macadamia nuts, pecans, pistachios, and cashews in moderation
Veggies(go crazy): All leafy greens, broccolli, caulliflower, and aspargus.
Fruit(limit these): berries, jicama, avacado(don't limit this one).
"Okay... What about exercise? I NEED carbs for that!"
If you need carbs, try a Cyclic Keto diet. Basically you eat like this during the week, and on the weekend you load up on however many carbs you can take, just bring down the fat intake. It works for athletes.
Fat and protein are the two most satiating things ever(yes, even more than fiber), you will burn body fat and be satieted AND be in your defecit easily. I can provide studies and more info in you PM me.

We've already heard of atkins diets and know the results. Humans cant stay off carbs for life, these people almost always gain back more than they lost on atkins.
You also fail to mention how horrible it is to kidneys to load them up with ketones.
Plus this "diet" will make you stink (ketonic) make you miserable with no carbs, and you'll gain all the weight back after you go off it. Pass. You go for it though!0 -
I'm not looking to start an argument, just lay down the facts. Your brain can and will willingly run on ketones, improved cognitive function is actually one benefit of nutritional ketosis. Also, this is not Atkins, it is different, Atkins is a high protein low carb diet. In the case of weight gain after coming off, you're right, but that's the thing about any diet. You always are deprived of something, and coming off of any diet, you are bound to gain weight. Atkins or not. Satiety and palatability are just ways to make it more bearable.0

Oh yes, initially you will smell, breath, pee and all, but if you brush and bathe, it's not noticable to anyone else.0

You're kidneys won't be harmed...? They process ketones fine, the only reason they would be harmed is if you don't drink water, and that goes for everyone0 -

Never followed this diet but have had friends do it "by the book". They've all told me with the meal plans from Atkins, protein was higher than fat intake.0 -

My husband was doing keto for about a month and lst 40lbs. Yes that is very fast BUT weighed a lot and had the fat to burn. Once I noticed his results I started myself. He did it for about a total of 5 1/2 months along with going to the gym daily and he lost a total of 155lbs!!!!!!! I did it for 3 months and lost 40lbs. He is healthier then ever and he looks amazing. I stopped keto for awhile but I know it works so i have recently started it up again.
People should really do research on this diet before they jump to conclusions. This diet is a diet that is given to morbidly obese individuals by many of doctors. It is also used to fight diabetes and epilepsy. It is NOT Atkins, however it is similar.
This is not a lifestyle diet, unless you have a medical condition in which it needs to be. This is just a kick start, many bodybuilder use it and suggest cycling between this and clean cutting. Once I am down to my main weight I will stop keto and make sure that I watch what I eat.

If person A was in a 500 calorie deficit from keto and personB was in a 500 cal deficit from a normal diet at the end of the week both person A and B would be in a 3500 calorie deficit. Why would I want to go Keto?0 -

I've been low-carbing and eating higher levels of protein and fat for a year, and my triglycerides and LDL levels have both gone up. So you can't really state that "you will have...improved cholesterol levels, and improved blood triglyceride levels with this diet" - it might have worked for you, but it's definitely not for everyone.0

I think that a ketogenic diet is a valid choice for a minority of people - especially those who have difficulty handling carbs due to insulin resistance or similar factors. It helps with appetite, hunger control and satiety as stated making it easier for some individuals to stay comfortably in a consistent calorie deficit.
The "speeding up weight loss" bit is a bit misleading as comparisons of isocaloric (equal calorie) keto and non keto diets have shown no meaningful difference (the Vasquez study IIRC)0 -

Yes, an over-concentration of keytones can cause kidney failure.

You sure seem to change your mind quite a bit about what a "good diet" should be. I read back through your previous posts and just in the span of about two months you've changed your mind completely three times.........welcome to your yo-yo dieting.

been on a low carb diet - 12months ago my bloods showed very high cholesterol - I had been low carbing for 6 months -
blood results given yesterday was a low level of cholesterol after taking doctors advice to stop low carbing
loosing weight is harder but my cholesterol is under control and my mental health is better
low carbing does not suit everyone0 -
Sounds like the recipe for a heart attack to me. That's got to be bad for the arteries long term surely? Is there a way to do this to lose weight then 'ease' back onto carbs? Life without carbs is no kinda life for me lol0

This is interesting, I think falls under the heading of fad diets, which MFP doesn't subscribe to, as far as I know. Sounds very much like Atkins or South Beach but I don't know a lot about South Beach - was on Atkins for a month or so many years ago and my daughter was so concerned about my health that I quit, without losing any weight. High fat/high protein/low carb diets keep surfacing. I've watched for about 20 years now as they keep coming up with new names for the same concept. I think it's just pleasurable to be able to eat a lot of protein and fat. I do know someone personally whose kidneys failed after extended Atkins but I don't know if a link was established.0

It only works because you're creating calorie deficit. There is only so much fat you can eat before you feel sick, if there are no carbs involved. Butter with no toast? Oil with no potatoes? Cream with no pie?
I did Atkins few years back for 2 weeks and I was miserable. Had fried breakfast every morning, but all I really wanted was a piece of toast.
And as for your body burning fat, yes it will, but it will be the fat you eat, not the fat you store. Again, it's all about calorie deficit.
And a lot of initial weight loss is water weight, as body is getting rid of glycogen.0 -
This works, think paleo. Also to the guys saying your brain runs on carbs - its made of fat therefore runs on fat not carbs.0
