Supplement protein vs "Normal" protein

Hello everyone,

I'm planning to buy protein supplements to boost my protein intake to 150g+ per day.
Protein you find in meats and dairy is known to satisfy your hunger for a good period of time. Does "supplement" protein do the same? Is protein from meats and dairy the same as the protein you find in supplements (Whey protein powders)?

Excuse my poor knowledge on this subject.

Thanks!

Protein, regardless of source, are all broken down to amino acids then absorbed by the body. Nothing wrong with a supplemental protein like whey to help boost protein intake. But I wouldn't count on whey at being the main supplier of daily protein.

Agreed! It doesn't leave you feeling 'full' the same way a chicken breast will, but it is great to have around if you can't make a meal, need to up your intake a bit, or want some fast digesting protein after a workout. I used to use it as a post workout 'meal' but lately I've just been making food because I enjoy that more. It is a supplement, that's all!

Whey protein is dairy. It's one of the two types of protein found in milk. If cheese is dairy, so is whey.

I find protein shakes fairly filling, though I make mine with milk not water so that might be a factor. When I was on a much steeper deficit that I am now sometimes I would have one for breakfast by itself and be pretty ok with that until lunchtime.

Whey has been purified from milk, so yes, it's the same protein as found in milk. Not the same as protein from a steak.

Whey is supposedly "fast digesting", so it isn't intended to keep you full for long periods of time - it's untended to be a pre- or post-workout supplement. To this end, some of the powders you buy will include whey hydrolysate, which is protein that has been broken down into smaller chunks to make it even more readily available. Peptides and free amino acids are (supposedly) even faster acting.

Casein is the other major milk protein. You can buy this as a supplement also. It is slower digesting and so might keep you fuller longer.

That said, I do find 2 scoops of whey in water quite filling. Not the same as a steak, but enough to tide me over as a snack. Some people will use it for breakfast, and I have done that too.
