the "mindset" behind clean eating/paleo

Since I'm kind of the forum goof and will not be all that respected/argued with vehemently as much, I'll just explain what is annoying to those of us who argue with you guys advocating "clean eating" and paleo.
For us, it's the anal retentive mindset that is most annoying and not what you actually aspouse for others to eat. Eating a diet full of heatlhy foods is absolutely good and beneficial, but grouping foods as "good" or "bad" we see as unhealthy. Also eliminating whole food groups is just a drastic step that will be far less beneficial as advice to the general audience as a whole (while acknowledging those with food allergies/sensitivities).
As a "for everyone" advice striving to eat the most whole foods you can, making sure you're getting adequate nutrition, and getting the message that a balanced diet is the most healthy for the average person is our goal. Our methods may seem offensive at times, but we all have hearts in the right place and are doing what we do to feel like we influence as many people as we can. Often for us that means some may be lost to our sarcasm/(and what could be called bullying sometimes), but we do genually strive to help as many people as we can.
Also, if you look at the diets of most of us, it's full of "clean" foods and mostly "clean" eating anyway. We've just reached that point where we realise that foods we enjoy don't have to wreck our diets or even that staying way off course in the short term doesn't have to affect the longterm.
I would just like to say that because it is the MINDSET that we disagree with most, that often our disagreements get personal and are viewed as "nasty" in a hurry and are often heated. And for that I apologize for "us", but I'd just like to say that it doesn't mean that we don't care or don't want to be supportive. We're just chosing a different means of trying to be supportive.

I went down the Paleo(ish) path for a bit, read all the WheatBelly stuff, ditched the legumes, etc.
And to be honest at the end I felt like I had an eating disorder.
One day I looked in the cupboard and didn't see "anything to eat" even though it was packed with food.
So I questioned why I needed to restrict whole groups of foods and came up with nothing. No intolerances, no allergies, no metabolic advantage.
I'm not knocking "cleaning" the diet up a bit but some people do need to question if such restrictions are honestly necessary.

Great post. I completely agree. Clean eaters seem to think that we're criticizing them for eating clean... that could not be farther from the truth. Eating healthy, whole foods is awesome! Scaring others into believing they have to eat the same way or they are going to get fat/be extremely unhealthy/die an early death is not awesome.0

I agree with you. Personally I love eating primal/paleo because I get wonderful benefits doing so. But to each their own -- I am not about preaching and striving to convert others just because I am stoked about it. It's not a freaking religion. And I see nothing wrong with treating yourself to something "processed" or "unhealthy" or what have you. My bottom line is do what makes you feel good and what works for you in the long run.0

I'm doing it because I am allergic to Gluten. It causes a host of illnesses for me. I wished I could have a pizza or slice of regular bread without an instant migraine.0

Good post but I dont think most of the people that think we are personally attacking them for their food choices will get it.
They go into a post and profess that someone NEEDS to eat clean to be successful. Someone corrects them. They take it personal and/or as we are saying they can eat nothing but "junk" and be healthy.
The same "mindset" that causes them to make these extreme all-or-nothing choices also prevents them from having any kind of logical discussion about it.0 -
Why do the non-paleo/primal eaters care about what others eat so much? Why all the redundant threads on the subject? Why not just care (or don't) about what you eat? I've only been visiting this forum for about 4 days now and I'm sick of all the paleo diet bashing already. Maybe I missed some nasty threads where someone said something really terrible about those that don't view food the same way, but why all the lingering hostility?
There will always be people with differing views on how to eat like vegan, vegetarian, pro-fasting, anti-fasting. Live and let live people.0 -

Because paleo and clean eating supporters do not live and let live. They preach and when they are written off or ignored they get rather nasty with their promises of illness and cancer. I get a handful of those PMs every week as do many of my friends. In addition, paleo in particular comes off as quite cultish with it's arguments about what is and is not paleo/primal and many of it's followers exhibit cultish behavior. It also has no basis whatsoever in science and it's a running joke among the Ph.D set that isn't getting paid for promoting it.
If you are new and want to learn how to eat in a manner that is healthy and sustainable without making yourself unnecessarily miserable then perhaps you should listen to what was posted by the OP.0 -

I don't mind the paleo diet, or the clean eating diet. If you're getting all of your nutrition, that's great. The problems I have is the benefits many preach that are just plain wrong (like the its not the calorie deficit its the clean/primal food people). I know some smart people who do paleo for smart reasons. They are completely reasonable. And when I argue my defense they completely get it and do not think I'm doing myself any harm and shortening my life and poisoning myself, because they are not orthorexic.0 -

I only cut out certain foods that cause me, as an individual, problems. I don't care how others lose weight or want to eat.
Not everyone can eat 'all the foods' but some folks CAN 'eat all the foods'. I don't like being told I can 'eat all the foods' when I really can't.
In any case, I don't give much of a **** what others decide to do.0 -
I agree with this 100%. I signed up for an online nutrition course recently and could not handle the constant bickering between vegetarians/vegans and paleos. Even as a vegan who is interested in health and nutrition I was equally annoyed with the people who were arguing my own diet's alleged magical health advantages. I really, really hate health supremacy in all of its forms.
Nutrition is not something scientists fully understand. As long as you're meeting basic needs and eating a reasonably varied diet, you should be okay. And so should everyone else who does the same. Stop shaming!0 -

Demonizing certain foods is why I failed so badly my first few months trying this. I suspect I'm not alone in that experience.
Good post, and while I hope that certain folks will "get" it, I doubt it'll happen. Most of the people who say "clean or nothing" are "all or nothing" types who can't see anything in the middle. The world for them is often black and white with no shades of grey between.0
