Dumbells for beginner questions

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in starting to lift weights, brand new at this. I'm wondering if starting off at 5lb dumbells would be okay, or worth while. I've never done this before, a friend of mine whos into body building says that my 5lbs will be a waste of time and I'll out grow them quick, and i should have gotten 10/ 15lbs. Yet I feel that buy doing so, I would be starting off too much, and risk injury. Is 5lb enough, or is he right? What did you guys start off with, and do you have any tips for anything homemade I could make instead of purchasing new ones. I thought of filling pop bottles with weight, but not sure if that would work or not.

You won't hurt yourself with 10lbs. You're better off buying a rack, bench, bar, and plates and doing sone real lifting.0

Ideally I would say the adjustable dumbbells are pretty awesome. They adjust from 5 -50 lbs, but they are rather expensive. If you do decide to go with the 10/15lb ones you will probably get more use out of them, but I would recommend the 5lbs over water bottles. For me, it all depends on the exercises I am doing. Starting off working specific muscles I have never focused on before I also have a hard time lifting the 10 pounders without losing proper form. Maybe fewer reps, more sets until you work up to more. However, some sports stores you can get the 5lbs for only a couple bucks and I use mine for cardio routines like JM dvds mostly.0
